Spider or beetle?

October 2019 Teacher Liz

Yusuf you came bounding in from outside to show me that

“spider” you found. The spider was actually a beetle! We
found a tray to better observe it and even a book with some
closer pictures we could see. The beetle looked to be dead
or asleep but teacher Rosy assured us that it was in fact
alive, it was protecting itself from us! We have investigated
and found that bugs are great camouflages and make
house for themselves in small spaces.
Of course the other children were also interested and come
to observe too. We were very careful and just used our
looking eyes. We watched as the beetle tried find a good
hiding spot. Yusuf, you were comfortable enough to ap-
proach the other children and share what you had found.
Once had we observed the beetle I explained to the chil-
dren that we needed to let her go back it go home, we gen-
tle put back into the garden. Maybe we will see her again! I
didn't know much about beetles so we googled about them
and together Yusuf and I learned about what they eat and
that they are great for gardens. We compared the book and
googled images to the real thing. Yusuf was totally fasci-
nated by this experience and I love how he maintained his
interest when we read the book together.
Children are getting very imaginative with hunting out the
bugs lifting up playground equipment, looking under rocks
tree stumps, in sand pit. Bugs are every where!
We have developed very observant eyes so we can see
them hiding.
