INTRODUCTION

Indo-American Hybrid Seeds (India) Pvt. Ltd. came into being on the 4th of
November, 1965. Established by our Chairman Padmashree Dr. Manmohan
Attavar, its primary focus was supplying seeds of the highest quality to the
American market.

50 years later, although we serve the Indian market predominantly, our focus
is unwavering; Quality is our priority. IAHS is mainly involved in the
development and production of hybrid seeds of vegetables, flowering plants,
field crops, and the production of ornamental plants. In 1973, our F1 hybrids
of Capsicum Bharath and Tomato Karnataka were the first hybrid vegetable
seeds to be released into the Indian market.

Over the years, through precise research and development IAHS has
developed wide range of products that are engineered to suit various agro-
climatic conditions, thus enabling us to cater to domestic as well as
international markets.

PLANT HYBRIDIZATION

Hybridization is an important method of combining characters of different

plants. It does not change the genetic contents of organisms but produces new
combination of genes. The chief objective of hybridization is to create
genetic variation, when two genotypically different plants are brought
together in F1. Plant hybridization may be intra-varietal, intra-specific, intra-
generic or introgressive hybridization. Plant hybrids may be developed to
increase yield, provide resistance to environmental stresses and various pests
and pathogens. Since the role of environment is almost negligible, the time
required for developing new variety may be drastically reduced because off-
season nurseries and greenhouses can be used for developing 2-3 generations
each year. The technique however poses limitations in the form of time and
high cost involved.

HYBRID SEEDS

Hybrid seeds are a commonplace in commercial farming, especially to

increase crop yields. They are produced from naturally out-breeding crops,
from which inbred lines are produced by repeated self-pollination. Hybrid
seeds are scientifically produced, either to sell to consumers or to grow
commercial crops. They give rise to plants with multitude of advantages like
higher vigor, improved disease resistance, earlier maturity, uniform plant
growth, increased yield, improved aesthetics of flowers and enhanced
palatability of fruits and vegetables. The hybrid seeds are prized because they
produce uniform plants benefiting from the effect called Heterosis (hybrid
vigor). However, production of sterile progenies serves as a major drawback
since farmers must buy those seeds from the company every year.
