For  a  website  source,  the  information  in  the  footnote  goes  in  the  order  listed  below.  Make  sure  to  
use  correct  grammar/punctuation.  
 
First  name  Last  name,  “Title.”  Website  name,  copyright  date,  <URL>.  
 
Source  Type:  Book  
 
For  a  book  source,  the  information  in  the  footnote  goes  in  the  order  listed  below.  Make  sure  to  use  
correct  grammar/punctuation.  
 
First  Name  Last  Name,  Title  of  the  Book  (Publishing  City:  Publisher,  year  published)  Page  
Number.  
 
Source  Type:  Interview  
 
For  an  interview,  the  information  in  the  footnote  goes  in  the  order  listed  below.  Make  sure  to  use  
correct  grammar/punctuation.  
 
First  Name  Last  Name  of  person  being  interviewed,  Personal  interview,  date  interview  was  
created.  
 
Source  Type:  Photo  or  Digital  Picture  
 
For  a  Photo  or  Digital  Picture,  the  information  in  the  footnote  goes  in  the  order  listed  below.  Make  
sure  to  use  correct  grammar/punctuation.  
 
“Title  of  the  Picture.”  Museum  or  Website  where  found.  Date  image  was  created.  
 
When  a  Source  is  Used  More  than  Once:  
 
If  a  source  has  already  been  used  in  a  previous  footnote  in  your  paper,  there  is  an  abbreviation  you  
can  use  to  reference  it  again.  Make  sure  to  pay  attention  to  the  grammar/punctuation.  
 
Book:  Author’s  Last  Name  Page  Number.   Example:  King  197  
 
Website  with  Author:  Author’s  Last  Name.     Example:  Cletheroe.  
 
Website  with  no  Author:  “Article  Title.”     Example:  “The  Dust  Bowl  Migration.”  
 
Interview:  Last  Name  of  person  interviewed.  
 
If  you  have  more  than  one  source  by  the  same  author:  Last  Name,  “Article  Title.”  
Example:  Cletheroe,  “The  Dust  Bowl  Migration.”  
Steps  to  putting  in  a  footnote  using  Word  or  Open  Office:  
 
Where  does  the  footnote  go:  At  the  end  of  the  sentence  where  you  want  to  cite  your  
information.  
 
Step  1:    Go  to  the  bar  at  the  top  of  your  screen  and  click  “insert”  
Step  2:  Click  on  “footnote”  
Step  3:  Make  sure  footnote  and  auto  number  bubbles  are  selected  and  then  click  “ok”  
Step  4:  At  the  bottom  of  your  page  you  should  see  a  number.  If  it  is  your  first  footnote  it  will  say  
1.  You  may  then  type  in  the  appropriate  footnote  citation.  
Step  5:  When  you  are  finished  typing  your  footnote,  scroll  back  up  to  where  you  left  off  in  your  
document  and  continue  writing.  Make  sure  that  when  you  continue  that  your  new  work  starts  
after  the  footnote  number  that  you  just  created.
