The Marpol 73/78 Annex VI, Regulation 16 states that all incinerators installed onboard on or

after 1 January 2000 has to be type approved in accordance with the MEPC. 244(66).

Furthermore the regulation prohibits incineration of:

 Marpol 73/78 Annex I, II and III cargo residues

 any Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s)
 exhaust gas cleaning systems residues

Please note that also incineration of polyvinyl chlorides (PVC’s) is prohibited if the incinerator IS NOT
type approved according to MEPC. 59(33), 76(40) or 244(66).

The IMO-Resolution MEPC. 244(66) (Replacing MEPC. 76(40)) Annex 8 covers the design,
manufacture, performance, operation and testing of marine incinerators. .
