Rules of Precis writing

1) One third length of paragraph: count each words like

child even “a” and “an” is counted
2) In your own words: Don’t pick expressions from
précis , omit expression if you don’t know the
meanings of that word.
3) Short simple sentences: don’t use long sentences if
right still then.
4) Indirect Narration: indirect narration must be used.
5) First person to be replaced by third person: we have
to explain writers idea not ours, don’t use “I Think”.
6) Omit examples: omit examples.
7) Not necessary the same sequence of ideas: Do précis
stepwise.
8) Coherence and continuity: It should convey the same
impression as that of passage, Start sentence with
connecting words it is a technique to build
coherence.
9) No alien ideas: Write what is written in passage.
10) No Repetition: No repetition of idea and
expression
11) A rough draft: Precis cannot be perfect at first
time you must have to make a rough draft on first
page.
12) A suitable title: Title may be a single word a
phrase or a sentence, You may borrow title from
passage.
