of his fitness coach, Michael Isidro, a former Muay Thai Champ. He excelled in this discipline and has competed

Muay Thai 2019 Fight that will be participated by 49 countries and will be held in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.
MSTP | Objectives

Aim: The aim of the programme is to ensure the athlete is psychological stable and ready to compete internationally
with his best and utmost performance.

Objectives:

1. To carry out a six week mental skills training program

2. Practice Muay Thai using various psychological methods
3. Re-evaluate psychological state with questionnaires

Targets:

The athlete needs to enhance his motivation and mind-set in the six weeks by performing well in the questionnaires at
the end of the programme. The athlete needs to improve his anxiety levels after the six week program by re-evaluating
his psychological state.
MSTP | Psychological Assessment

From carrying out the different methods of assessment, specific psychological areas were determined that
needs to be focused on in the six weeks programme for the athlete. These were his motivation and his arousal levels. His
arousal levels are low which is suggested by a low anxiety score. Also his motivation level results from his low level of
commitment due to the demands of his education.

MSTP | Week 4 Programme
MSTP | Justification for the Programme

 Six weeks
o It is not too long or too short and so provides enough time for techniques to become a habit.
 Goal Setting
o It is easy to carry out and provides daily reminders of what needs achieving and the athlete will not
usually want to fail so will try their best to achieve the goals.
 Music
o It is the medium people from all walks of life feels connected to and is freely available, raises heart
rate, lyrics inspire and music playing via earphones helps in closing off the world.
 PMR
o Relaxing and leisure can ensure the athlete is not too aroused, easy to carry out and can be done at
any time in the event that the athlete is too aroused, therefore is perfect to counteract the other
techniques if they have been overused at some point in the programme.

Each technique has been specifically placed in an ideal place within the programme to ensure maximum results are
produced. Goal setting is at the start of the week to motivate; music is used before training to increase arousal to
ensure enough effort is put in. Acting energised is used when the athlete will be getting tired from training and PMR is
used before a competition so the athlete is not too aroused.

MSTP | Areas for Improvement

There are a few areas which could be improved if this was to be repeated in the future. Firstly, the programme could
concentrate on either fewer or more psychological skills as one would allow for greater depth and an all-round
improvement. The questionnaires at the start of the programme are very subjective as they are filled in/ answered by
the subject rather than being assessed by a sports psychologist.

Furthermore, the program also included small Muay Thai competitions so that the athlete gets more used to competing
and allowing him to train physically. It is also the best time to apply all techniques in mental skills training as this would
ensure they become set in stone.
MSTP | Conclusion

Review

The techniques that were used were chosen carefully due to a number of positives they all have, however, I feel
that acting energised is lacking in mental skills program as this is better for a team sport which can evoke a bigger
reaction.

The methods of assessment were acceptable, however, were very subjective and so would have been better if I
had assessed the client myself during a sporting situation, such as a competition or a training session.

Athlete’s Progress

On completion of the six week programme the athlete completed the questionnaires once again in order to
show a comparison from before he had started the training programme. The results are as follows:

Recommendations
In the future, athlete has a tendency to have high arousal levels and excessive motivation, thus, there is a need to
carry out more decreasing techniques such as breathe control and PMR.

Athletes’ Perception

“The six week mental skills training program ensured that I am

more motivated and aroused before both training and competition
situations which has over the duration enabled me to improve my
performance when I race.”
