ALL ABOUT CMAT

CMAT LAST WEEK PREPARATION

TIPS
As per the experts, in the last week, there is not much a candidate can do to change their
preparation status drastically. However, with the following tips, you can get yourself pre-
pared for the D-Day.

1. Keep taking mock tests

You can take a couple of mock tests in the remaining few days. “Ideally you can take two mock
tests in a week. Once you take a mock test, analyze your performance thoroughly and avoid
the mistakes in the next mock test and more importantly on the exam day,” suggests Gautam
Puri, Vice Chairman, Career Launcher. Lagnajit Das, CMAT 2017 AIR 2 shares, “I solved as
many CMAT mock series as possible to get a grip on my weak areas.”

2. Avoid starting a new topic

Now that you have few days left for the exam, there is no point in starting a new topic. How-
ever, if CMAT 2018 is your first attempt in the MBA entrance exam, then you can make the
choice of the topics you are absolutely confident about and leave the rest of the topics which
you are not comfortable in.

3. Revise the basics

If your basics are clear, then no matter how tough or tricky the question is, you will be able to
solve the questions. Arks Srinivas, CEO-MBA Group, Career Launcher says, “The difficulty
level of the CMAT exam mostly ranges from easy to moderate. Hence having the basics
brushed up will help you in solving the majority of the questions.”

4. Manage Time on the Test Day

It is important for every student to not to get stuck in a question and waste time over it,
rather, mark and leave that question for the end. Do easy questions first and mark the difficult
ones for the end, this helps in completing most of the questions within the test duration. On
time management, CMAT Topper Supreet explains, “I started with Quant section and dedi-
cated 45 minutes to it and skipped 2-3 tough questions. And then started with Reasoning,
gave another 40-45 minutes to it. I found 1-2 questions time consuming so I skipped them
too. Then for Verbal section I gave another 45 minutes and completed all the questions.
After that, I attempted 25 questions of General Awareness that took around 10 minutes. By
dividing the time efficiently in the end I had 5-6 skipped questions to attempt and 20-25
minutes left”.

22
ALL ABOUT CMAT

CMAT 2018 Section Wise Strategy:

Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation
This section will have questions related to areas in Arithmetic, higher mathematics, Per-
mutation & Combination, Geometry and Algebra etc. In the subsection Data Interpreta-
tion, Bar Graph and tables questions will be asked. This section is easy for you to crack if
you practice. It is also important to not to get stuck with a question while attempting the
test.

Logical Reasoning
The main topics of the Logical Reasoning section will be Linear Arrangements, Blood
Relations, Visual Reasoning and Coding Decoding. It is best to solve mocks and practice
from last year question papers.
CMAT topper, Amitrajit shares his experience about CMAT LR section, he says, “The
toughest was Logical Reasoning, actually more of time-consuming. LR takes a lot of time
to solve as it does not follow a pattern. This section has random questions which are based
on different logic, so it consumes time to read, think and solve them. Language and QT
were moderate for me.”

Language Comprehension
The Reading Comprehension and English Usage areas comprise the Language Compre-
hension section. This section might seem easy but could be tricky. Candidates must be
careful while answering this section. In order to get a good score in this section, you need
to have analytical and vocabulary skills.
Apart from Reading Comprehension, the other areas included will be Verbal Reasoning,
Grammar, Para Jumble, Fact Inference Judgment, Vocabulary and Fill in the Blanks. In
order to get a good score in this section, you need to have analytical and vocabulary skills.

General Awareness
This section might be easy and will have questions related to banking, sports, arts and
culture, geography, history, politics, business etc. Cracking the section won’t be difficult
for those who are in touch with current affairs. Lagnajit says. “To strengthen this section,
I made sure that I read a newspaper daily. With that, I was able to keep myself updated
with the latest happenings around the world.”

ALL ABOUT CMAT

CMAT EXAM DAY GUIDELINES

It’s important for the candidates to check all the exam day guidelines before appearing for
the exam. These guidelines are also mentioned on the admit card.

Check your test centre

Check your CMAT exam centre location a couple of days prior to your CMAT schedule. If
possible visit your test centre a day prior to your exam to get an estimate of the distance and
time it will take you to reach the venue on time.

Arrange your documents

●● Before assigning you the exam desk, your documents will be checked in order to prove your candi-
dature. The documents which you must carry at the CMAT exam centre are
●● CMAT Admit Card with your scanned passport size photo on it.
●● One original and valid photo identification cad including Driver’s license, Passport, PAN Card,
Voter ID, UID card or a notarized Affidavit (in English) with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and
Residential Address.
●● Physically disabled candidates have to bring the valid Disability certificate in Original and an

ALL ABOUT CMAT

CMAT EXAM DAY STRATEGIES

There are certain strategies that every candidate must follow in order to crack the test with
a good percentile. Here they are:

Read questions carefully

As soon as the test starts, skim through the questions. Mentally mark the questions which you
are comfortable to attempt. Make sure that you have divided a good number of questions in
each section in order to maintain a section wise balance and meet the cut off score.

Start with your comfortable section

Start with a section which you are comfortable in dealing with among the total number of
four sections. Starting the exam with questions from your section of strength will instill
confidence in you. If you start well, you will take the entire exam confidently.

Manage your time well

The duration of the exam is 3 hours. The total number of questions is 100. According to
experts, an attempt of over 15 questions in each section will fetch you a good score. Hence
you need to allot time to each question carefully so that you don’t run out of time.

Don’t get stuck in a question

At times the question which seemed easily solvable turn out to be a tricky one. It might take
longer than usual to get the idea on which direction to move towards. In such cases, leave the
question and select another question instead.

Utilize your scratch sheet

You will get scratch sheet for your rough calculation. Make full use of it by showing your
step by step method of calculation. The examiners will check your scratch sheet to ensure
that you have answered a question correctly on the basis of your calculation method itself.

When in doubt, leave it out

It is not uncommon to receive a wrong question in your CMAT paper. None of the answer
options would match with the answer which you have derived after spending a good number
of minutes working it out. Either the question is incorrect or your method is wrong. In any
which way, it is better to leave it out.

Revise
If you finish before 3 hours, revise your answers as well as the scratch sheet. Ensure that
there is no silly mistake in the exam which can mar your score. While taking the test, manage
your time in such a way so that you are left with a considerable amount of time for revision.

B-schools accepting the score, CMAT was the perfect platform for me.

Careers360: How did you prepare for CMAT? Did you join any coaching?
Saras: I prepared on my own and did not join any coaching. I referred to the online study materials
to know the overall exam structure, question types, syllabus etc. I practiced sectional and overall test
papers online to get a grip on the exam navigation and interface.

Careers360: What was your strongest and weakest sections of CMAT?

Saras: Frankly, I did not have any strong or weak section per se. Since I had no other option but to

attempt questions from each section, I considered each section as my strength. Even during prepa-
ration, I gave equal time to each section. Moreover, since the number of questions in each section
was same, there was no point in having a varied strategy for different sections.

Careers360: What was your exam day strategy and experience of taking the test?
Saras: It was a very good experience for me. Although there were few technical issues but that
was nothing major in nature. I did not go with a prior plan and attempted the sections in the order
of appearance. Moreover, I did not stick to a particular section and moved to and fro to solve ques-
tions from each area. I was thoroughly enjoying the experience. I solved QT, LR and GA sections in
one hour and took two hours to solve the Language Comprehension section. While the first three
sections were really easy and hardly took much time to solve, the LC section required full focus and
dedication to answer the questions.

Careers360: Now that the result is out, have you started preparing for GD PI or WAT
rounds?
Saras: Till now I have not started preparing for these rounds. But I think it is high time that I start
preparing. I shall start with it soon.

Careers360: Where do you want to see yourself in terms of career after completing MBA?
Saras: My sole purpose of doing MBA is to uplift the condition of the under privileged members
of the society. I would like to progress m that direction itself. I want my education to add value to
my ambition. Earning money is not a priority for me. I want to give back to the society through my
endeavours after the completion of MBA from a top B-School.

Careers360: What are your hobbies? Did you get enough time to pursue them during the
preparation phase?
Saras: I love to travel and explore different cultures and lifestyles. I talk to different people and
know and be a part about them. Whenever I got time, I used to set out for a new adventure.

Careers360: What is your message for CMAT 2018 takers?

Saras: First and foremost point is to prepare and take the exam in a stress free manner. During
preparation, give equal importance to each section and don’t leave out any area. Enjoy the process,
the result will speak for itself.
