Function/Purpose: Responsible to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor for the maintenance of all mechanical equipment
at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Utilizes Operators and a temporary Maintenance Labourer in
maintaining the equipment. Works with and directs some of the maintenance contractors.

Job Reports To: Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor. Takes direction from Lead Operator

Directly Reporting To This Job: Gives direction to Maintenance Labourer(s), Operators assisting in maintenance and some
maintenance contractors.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Authorities

1. Responsible for all regular maintenance, modifications, construction, emergency repair and call out repair of the equipment, building and
process systems at the Wastewater Plant. This includes a variety of pumps up to and including variable speed pumps, air compressors,
boilers, heat exchangers, heating and ventilation, air conditioning and a variety of piping and valves, etc. It also includes a wide variety of
treatment process equipment. 60%
2. Maintain an inventory of spare parts, equipment and lubricants. Do the purchasing of equipment and supplies and make recommendations for
budget purposes as they relate to maintenance. 10%
3. Acquire knowledge of the Wastewater Treatment Plant operation for trouble shooting, co-ordinate with the Operators the proper isolation of
equipment, returning it back to service and to cover operator shifts. 9%
4. Manage the Preventative Maintenance System to ensure it meets plant needs and maintain the maintenance files. Perform the preventive
maintenance such as replacing equipment oil, seals, bearings, belts, filters, pump impellers, diaphragms, etc. Also make a variety of
equipment adjustments and regular lubrication of equipment. 7%
5. Train Operators and Maintenance Labourer(s) in proper maintenance procedures as it relates to their duties. 5%
6. Research, evaluate and apply improved maintenance techniques. Make recommendations to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor on
major modifications or changes. 3%
7. Co-ordinate with the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor and Lead Operator in scheduling manpower and equipment repairs for start-
ups, shut downs, routine inspections and emergency repairs. 2%
8. Perform general housekeeping duties during and after maintenance on equipment and grounds. 2%
9. Instruct Operators on technical operation of equipment to optimize equipment life and plant efficiency. 2%
10. Miscellaneous carpentry and general handiwork. Occasionally work at Water Treatment Plant and other related duties assigned by
Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor. 2%
11. For the purpose of vacation, sick, and other relief this position may be required to fill in on 12-hour operating shifts.

Minimum Requirements
1. Grade 12 supplemented by specialized courses in pumps, basic electricity, equipment maintenance and millwrighting.
Possession of a ticket in a related trade would be a benefit (Millwright, Plumbing, Electrical).
2. Four years recent experience in equipment maintenance, preferably in a Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant.
3. Must hold a valid Building Operator "B" Certificate through the Alberta Boiler Branch.
4. Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of various equipment and machinery
5. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop manuals and schematic drawings
6. Ability to do some carpentry, sheet metal work, plumbing and pipefitting
7. Ability to deal with consultants, contractors, vendors and give direction to assistants
8. 8 Ability to exert high physical effort, work in confined spaces, heights and awkward positions. Able to work in hot and cold
conditions as well as areas that are dirty, malodorous, unhygienic and noisy.
9. Be inoculated for health purposes. (Tetanus and Diphtheria)
10. Be familiar with health, safety and environmental standards. Able to exercise care when working near rotating equipment,
high voltage equipment and equipment associated with storing and pumping hazardous chemicals.
11. Ability to provide close attention when working with small parts of complex equipment and to use good eyesight and
hearing for diagnosing problems and inspecting work
12. Must possess a Class 5 Alberta Driver's License
