Blossoms Book House

The first impression that one gets on entering Blossoms is that of awe and disbelief at the sheer
quantity of books that one is surrounded by. The next shock will be the cheap prices – even on
new books, Blossoms has a significant cut-down from the market price. The store not just deals
in mainstream genres – the books span from rare comics [even manga and long-lost Indian
graphic novels] to tiny hand-sewn poetry anthologies that you won’t get anywhere else. Even
if you go in thinking you’ll buy one book may be, since it’s second-hand anyway, you will end
up splurging all your money; there is a book for everyone at Blossoms. For the more studious,
there are also countless academic books sold at really low prices donated by old students. In
short, it is the perfect peaceful getaway not just for booklovers, but also for anyone looking for
a quiet evening off, for Blossoms is a place where time feels suspended. There are two separate
stores, a walkable distance from each other if you want to explore more genres.
WHERE: #3, Church Street, Shantala Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Bangalore
WHEN: Open from 10:30 – 8:30 on all days
HOW TO GET THERE
If you’re going by bus, it’ll take you about Rs. 20 to get there – there are several buses that go
to Brigade Road, you can just walk from the bus station and reach the beautiful premises of
Church Street. If you prefer taking the metro, you can take an auto to JP Nagar Metro station,
about half an hour away from the campus, from where it’ll take you another fifteen minutes to
get the tickets, climb all the way up, take the shuttle etc. The metro itself will cost you around
forty bucks, but the auto to the station may cost you a lot extra. If you get off at the M G Road
Metro Station you can just walk to Church Street easily.
Taking an auto or a cab would take you around 30 minutes minimum, 45 minutes max – but it
is advised that you have company with you so you can split the cost.
HOW LONG WILL YOU SPEND THERE?
Depends on how much you love books! An avid book lover can spend hours getting lost in the
endless aisles of books categorized haphazardly into genres, but one can easily spend two to
three hours in Blossoms. If you leave in the morning, you can spend a good two hours in
Blossoms, have lunch at one of the delectable restaurants in Church Street and go to the second
building where more books await your perusal. They provide drinking water as well as
bathrooms available so you can stay as long as you want!
And cherry on the top! If you’re lucky, you may even find free books there – rare hardbound
copies of detective novels and romance are often stacked outside for you to take home.
HOW MUCH WILL YOU SPEND THERE?
Chances are, if you’re a bibliophile, you’ll end up buying way more than you intend to. The
shop has a carry basket that, by the time you’re done, will be full of books, stationary and even
games! But the good thing is that everything is cheaper than the marked price so the expenditure
can be kept between Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000.
WHAT CHRISTITES ARE SAYING!
We asked Ritikaa Khanna of 2ECOH A about her visit to Blossoms:
When and how did you go to Blossoms?
I went during September with a couple of my friends. We took the cab – we split the cost
between us three. We left Hulimavu at around 9:30 AM – it took us around forty-five minutes
to get there though, probably because it was a Sunday.
What was your first impression?
I’m not a very avid reader, but I was blown away at the number of books that were there! I
don’t know if it was the cheap prices or the sheer quantity of books but I suddenly felt the urge
to buy a few. And I did!
What was your favourite thing about Blossoms?
I guess it has an otherworldly charm to it…it’s like an entering another world. People keep
quiet even though no one is asking them to. It’s almost like entering the Hogwarts Library –
the haphazard way in which the books are stacked has something aesthetic and magical to it.

So there you go folks! Blossoms Book House is an ideal weekend getaway for Christites who
are looking for some peace and quiet away from the hectic routine of college life.
