The speed of air f low through a vented brake disc will depend on
the brake disc diameters and the wheel speed. This program will
calculate the wheel speed and air speed f lowing through the
vented brake disc. The volume and mass of air f low must be calculated
separately using vane passage sizes and f low coef ficients.

How much energy do my brakes absorb?

This worksheet calculates the kinetic energy and power
required to slow any vehicle f rom one speed to another..

Enter the vehicle weight. Enter the initial speed and the
f inal speed. If braking to a stop, enter zero as the f inal
speed. Enter the time it takes to perf orm the braking.

The Kinetic energy developed by the brakes is very large,

and varies with the square of the speed. Thus, the energy to
brake f rom 100 to zero is f our times that required to brake
f rom 50 to zero.

The Power of the brakes may be many times greater

than the engine's power, f or most vehicles.

The worksheet assumes that all braking f orces are generated

by the brakes only. Aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, engine
braking or road grade can dissipate brake energy, as well.

Effect of G's on Braking Time and Distance How much time can I save by braking harder?
In most racing vehicles, the brakes are the most powerf ul system on the vehicle.
Initial Speed 175 mph Yet many race drivers routinely use only a f raction of the system's capability.
Final Speed 60 mph This can leave perf ormance and time on the table.
To visualize how much time is available, f or a single brake application:
