Qualitative Research

Chapter I
Introduction

Guides to what to write. Write your proposal here.

1.1 Background of the Study 1.1 Background of the Study
 Highlight the topic under
investigation. Present some
related studies.
 “Go down to earth.” Describe your
experience in working with the
topic, your knowledge about the
topic, or any fact you think, know,
or feel about the topic.
 Conclude it: first, argue that it is
necessary to conduct research on
the topic and, second, state the
research problem (in a question
form) you intend to investigate. A
research problem is the general
subject of investigation or a
confusing situation that has to be
narrowed down into some very
specific questions that help
determine the direction of the
subsequent inquiry.

1.2 Research Questions 1.2 Research Questions

 Begin with a brief description of the
problem to be investigated as the
basis for formulating research
questions.
 Describe areas/points/details of the
problem to be investigated.
 Formulate some research questions
(i.e., specific questions that have to
be answered through investigation)
based on the problem you stated in
the background. Formulate research
questions that are only within or do
not go beyond the aforementioned
problem.

1.3 Objectives 1.3 Objectives

 Formulated based on the research
questions.

3
1.4 Limitations of the Study 1.4 Limitations of the Study
 Describe what the study will cover
and will not cover.
 Present the argument of the
limitations.

1.5 Significance of the Study 1.5 Significance of the Study

 Describe the importance of the

study to theory development and
practical purposes (other
researchers, teachers, students,
textbook writers, curriculum
designer, etc.).

1.6. Definition of Key Terms 1.6. Definition of Key Terms

 Define key woirds/phrases therein
the title, research problem, and
research questions.
 Define each word/phrase
operationally (i.e., can be
observed and measured).

Research Methodology

Guides to what to write. Write your proposal here.

3.1 Research Design 3.1 Research Design
 State that your study is qualitative.
 Argue why it is supposed to be
qualitative

3.2 Research Setting 3.4. Research Setting

 Describe the place where the sudy
will be conducted.

3.3 Subjects
 State and describe the
person/people you will study.

4
3.4 Data and Source of Data
 State clearly the data you will collect
and use to answer the research
questions.
 Identify and state the source of the
data.

3.5 Data Collection Technique

 The researcher is the key
instrument.
 The techniques can be:
observation and/or interviews.

 Explain the triangulation

Notes:
A qualitative study needs triangulation (i.e., the use of more methods of data collection in
order to map out, or explain more fully, the richness and comoplexity of human behaviour:
1) Time triangulation: conducted at different times; considering factors of change and
process
2) Space triangulation: condcuted at different places to avoid narrowness
3) Combined levels of triangulation: using more than one level of analysis (individual,
group, organizational/cultural/soicietal)
4) Theoretical triangulation: using alternative/competeing theories
5) Investigator triangulation: using more than one investigator
6) Methodological triangulation:a) the same method on different occasios, or b) different
methods on the same object of study.

3.6 Data Analysis

 Inductively
 Looking for similarities/pecuiarities
as the basis for making
conclusion.
 Steps:
1) Data Classification
2) Data Reduction
3) Reflection
4) Reporting
