Assignment:

What is the meaning of Intercultural Communication?

According to Lanqua.eu, Intercultural communication is defined as “situated

communication between individuals or groups of different linguistic and cultural

origins”. This is definition is derived from the following fundamental ideas:

Communication is the active relationship and interaction between individuals through

verbal and nonverbal ways, and, intercultural means that this communicative interaction

is between people of different cultures, where culture is viewed as the “structured

manifestation of human behavior in social life within specific national and local contexts,

e.g. political, linguistic, economic, institutional, and professional”. (Intercultural

Communication)

Intercultural communication skills are those essential to communicate, or

exchange information, with people from other cultures and social groups. While

language skills are vital in intercultural communication, they are by no means the only

requirement. “Intercultural communication also requires an understanding that different

cultures have different customs, standards, social mores, and even thought patterns”.

Lastly, good intercultural communication skills require a willingness to accept these

differences s and adapt to them. (Intercultural Comunication Skills)

Why is Intercultural Communication important? Provide examples.

Successful communication involves the effective transfer of knowledge and

information. Communicating across cultures becomes increasingly important as

economies evolve and become more interconnected. Someone with intercultural

communication skills has the ability to interact with people from different cultural

backgrounds with respect, avoiding potential miscommunications and resulting in more

productive interaction. Intercultural communication is an important aspect of a person’s

intercultural competence, or the ability to function effectively across cultures.

Intercultural competence enables the individual to interact with people of other cultures

effectively and remain aware of cultural differences. (The Importance of Intercultural

Communication in International Development)

Intercultural communication can be observed in a school setting where there are

students from various places and cultures. In school and classroom activities, being able

to interact and effectively communicate with schoolmates or classmates from different

cultures with respect and understanding is vital in promoting a healthy school

environment. Through your intercultural communication skills, you can build a good

learning environment where students from different backgrounds are able to

communicate and learn from one another. On the other hand, in a business environment,

intercultural communication allows businessmen to increase their value and the value of

the organizations they represent. Intercultural communication skills lead to better-

quality negotiations and aid in establishing business deals and agreements.
