How can one define a social space? Prior to the digital age,
the popularity of any given social space could have been
quantified by it’s visitor numbers alone. Now, however,
it’s not so simple.

Young people, in particular, are using spaces in entirely

new ways, shaped by the powerful influences of the social

conclusions
social
Through the initial data mapping, Hackney’s social hub
and, conversely, its voids were identified. Qualitative and
comparative research into each of these cases initially
seemed to point to no clear markers, or ‘ingredients’,
unique to Hackey’s social hubs (beyond the clear transport
connections and density of social spaces). Rather, each
hub presented a complex, broad and difficult to quantify
variety of price points and programs, thus catering to a
broad spectrum of society. Hence, it can be concluded
that Hackney is not reliant on one ‘secret ingredient,’ but
instead it is through its rich diversity that bustling social
spaces have emerged and thrived.
