SPEECH : GIRL GUIDE : LEADERSHIP

A very good afternoon to the judges, guiders, teachers and to all the
participants. Today, on this remarkable bright day, as we are sitting here,
in this wonderful place of gathering, I’m going to give a speech on what
it takes to become the greatest leader among leaders. Being a leader and a
student at the same time is not easy. It takes a lot of efforts and
knowledge to be a great leader.

So, what is leadership? Leadership can be defined in so many

different ways. According to John C Maxwell, a leader is one who knows
the way, goes along the way and shows the directions of the way. As a
girl’s guide member and a leader myself, I would say leadership means
more than that. I believe that a good leader should build and develop the
good leadership qualities within themselves first before they can guide
and lead others.

The 34th President of the United States once said, “The supreme
quality of leadership is unquestionably integrity”. To him, without
integrity, it is impossible to achieve a real success, whether it is on a
football field, in an army or in an office. A good leader needs two most
important ingredients, which are honesty and integrity. A leader can never
expect the followers to be honest when they themselves, lack those two
essential qualities.

Besides, to be an effective leader, you should be confident enough to

ensure that others follow your commands. If you are unsure about your
own decisions and qualities, then people will not have confidence on you
and they will never follow you. As a leader, you have to be oozing with
confidence, show some swagger and assertiveness in order to gain respect
of other people.

Furthermore, the hardest job for a leader is persuading others to

follow. Only by setting and showing a good example, a leader will be
able to inspire other people to follow. According to John Quincy Adams,
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and
become more, you are a leader”.

So, I guess that’s all from me. As a leader, every bit that you do, every
step that you take, every decision that you make, will determine what the
country’s future will be. There are too many great challenges and also
opportunities for all of us to explore out there, in the real world. Thus,
with the strength that we have inside us, we surely will be able to become
a great guide! Together we unite to form a great leadership.
