Lesson 1

Materials: The Dot by Peter Reynolds

Standards:

ELAGSE1RI7: Use illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

ALA/AASL Standard 1: Teaching for Learning Candidates are effective teachers who
demonstrate knowledge of learners and learning and who model and promote collaborative
planning, instruction in multiple literacies, and inquiry-based learning, enabling members of the
learning community to become effective users and creators of ideas and information. Candidates
design and implement instruction that engages students' interests and develops their ability to
inquire, think critically, gain and share knowledge.

I CAN ask and answer questions about key details, identify the main topic, retell key details,
identify the author’s reasons to support points in a text, and add drawings and visuals to clarify
ideas.

Procedure:

Opening: Essential Question: What do you predict this book will be about?

Show students the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds. Have students pair share what they predict
the book will be about. Have students share their predictions with the class.

Middle: Whole Group

Read The Dot by Peter Reynolds aloud to students. Students will then discuss the art shown
throughout the story and the main idea of the story.

End:

Have students pair share how the author supported the theme throughout the book. Have students
share their answers with the class. Explain to students that no matter if you are big or small,
young or old, you can always make a difference.

Evaluation: Students will be assessed through teacher observation of student participation.

Lesson 2

Materials: The Dot by Peter Reynolds, paper, black markers, crayons, colored pencils

Standards:

ELAGSE1RI8: Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
ELAGSE1RI7: Use illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.
ELAGSE1SL5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to
clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

ALA/AASL Standard 2: Literacy and Reading Candidates promote reading for learning,
personal growth, and enjoyment. Candidates are aware of major trends in children's and young
adult literature and select reading materials in multiple formats to support reading for
information, reading for pleasure, and reading for lifelong learning. Candidates use a variety of
strategies to reinforce classroom reading instruction to address the diverse needs and interests of
all readers.

identify the author’s reasons to support points in a text, and add drawings and visuals to clarify
ideas.

Procedure:

Opening: Essential Question: What do you think Peter Reynolds wanted us to learn from the
story?

Display the front cover of Peter Reynolds’ The Dot. Have students share with the class what their
interpretations of the drawing are.

Middle: Whole Group

Review the story The Dot by Peter Reynolds. Students will then receive a piece of paper to create
their own dot. Instruct and model to students to draw one dot on their paper with a black marker.
Students will then use their crayons and colored pencils to change their dot drawing into
something else. Monitor students while they are drawing and ask questions about their drawings.

End:

Have students share their drawing and provide an explanation as to what and why they drew their
image.

Lesson 3

Materials: The Dot by Peter Reynolds, iPads, Chromebooks, Flipgrid app

Standards:

ELAGSE1W6: With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of tools to produce and
publish writing, including digital tools and collaboration with peers
ELAGSE1SL5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to
clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
ELAGSE1SL4: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing
ideas and feelings clearly.

Procedure:

Opening: Essential Question: How can you make a difference in your school or town?

Review the main topic learned from The Dot with students. Have students pair share how they
can make a difference in our school and community. Have students share their answers with the
class. Discuss how we will share our dot illustrations with others in our school by recording our

explanations of our dot illustrations. Explain to students that we will be using our videos to
inspire others to be creative and try new things.

Middle: Whole Group

Model to students how they will record themselves and what to say using the instructions on The
Dot grid. Show students the checklist for grading. The checklist will include that students will
state what their illustration is, how they created it and why they chose that idea.

End:

Select three students’ work at random to share with the class. Have students discuss as a class if
the student included all three ideas in their video. Have students provide feedback on what areas
were successful and what areas need improvement.

Evaluation: Students will be assessed through teacher observation of student participation,


Flipgrid video submission, completed checklist.
