EN 71-14: 2014 Safety of Toys – Trampolines for Domestic

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has now published EN 71-14.
This standard is being published by National Standards Bodies and it is expected that
the European Union (EU) Commission will “harmonise” this standard (publish its
reference in the Official Journal) within the next three months.

Scope of Standard

The standard, which has been under preparation for several years, specifies requirements and test
methods for trampolines for domestic use, their access devices and their enclosures, intended for outdoor
and/or indoor use above ground level by one person at a time.

The scope does not include the following:

- trampolines used as gymnastic equipment (addressed by EN 13219)

- floating inflatable trampolines (addressed by the EN 15649 series)
- trampolines used in public playgrounds
- inclined mat trampolines
- inflatable trampolines
- fitness trampolines, including trampolines for medical use
- trampolines with additional features, e.g. tents, basketball hoop
- trampolines for domestic use buried at ground level

Summary of Requirements

The standard splits domestic trampolines into three separate categories - mini, medium or large,
depending upon frame size, frame height and maximum user weight :
General requirements include:
 mini-trampolines intended for indoor use shall be provided with anti-slip feet
 medium and large trampolines shall be equipped with an enclosure (which is subject to various requirements)
 durability of materials (both metallic and non-metallic parts)
 prevention of (finger, head, neck, foot) entrapment
 sharp edges, sharp points, protruding parts
 access devices, e.g. ladders
 padding requirements
 impact resistance
 strength (of frame, access devices and enclosures)
 mat deflection
 stability
 warnings, marking and instructions

The requirements in EN 71-1 are applicable, except for the following, which are addressed by EN 71-14:
- edges
- sharp points
- protruding parts
- toys which a child can enter

However, the above mentioned requirements from EN 71-1 are not exempted for trampolines intended for children under 36
months.
