2 Overview

In UMTS networks, circuit switched (CS) and packet switched (PS) services are processed in
parallel, such as web browsing during a call. As defined in 3GPP Technical Specifications, DTM
is used to support simultaneous CS and PS services in GSM or Enhanced Data rates for GSM
Evolution (EDGE) networks. The DTM feature has been introduced in GSM networks to provide
services similar to those provided by UMTS networks (3G-like services), attract more
subscribers, and increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) for operators.

2.1 Introduction
DTM is a standard function defined in 3GPP Technical Specifications and is applicable to class
A MSs in GSM networks. DTM supports dual transfer mode in addition to dedicated mode, idle
mode, packet idle mode, and packet transfer mode. A DTM-capable MS can have simultaneous
CS and PS connections and process CS and PS services simultaneously. Subscribers can
therefore send images or browse web pages during a call.

2.2 Benefits
In UMTS networks, CS and PS services are processed in parallel. DTM enables GSM
subscribers to enjoy services similar to those provided by UMTS networks. In addition, a GSM
network can supplement a UMTS network in terms of coverage. Based on common DTM, Class
11 DTM doubles the uplink rate. Based on common DTM, HMC DTM triples the uplink and
downlink rates.
After DTM is enabled, the following applications can be introduced to create new revenue
streams for GSM operators:
 Videophone
Subscribers can enjoy uninterrupted data services, for which guaranteed bit rates (GBRs)
are ensured, during a speech service.
 Watching or downloading streaming programs
Speech interaction or answering a call is now possible during web browsing. Subscribers
may require circuit switched (CS) services while watching streaming programs. With DTM
enabled, CS services can be performed without interrupting the streaming programs.
 Sending images or videos during a call

3 Technical Description

3.1 DTM Multislot Capability

The DTM multislot capabilities are independent of the currently defined 3GPP TS 45.002
multislot capabilities. Different MSs may have different DTM capabilities. When EGPRS or
EGPRS2 is supported, the DTM multislot capability for EGPRS or EGPRS2 operation is
indicated separately from the DTM multislot capability for GPRS operation. According to 3GPP
TS 43.055, the DTM multislot classes are classes 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 31-33, 36-38, and 41-44, and
class 31 and higher classes are called HMC DTM. The higher the DTM multislot classes
supported by the MSs and network devices, the higher the uplink and downlink data rates that
can be supported.
Incremental support is defined in the protocol to reduce the length of coding. With this support,
an MS that supports a certain multislot class supports the less restrictive DTM multislot classes.
Figure 3-1 and Figure 3-2 describes the incremental support of DTM multislot classes and HMC
DTM multislot classes, respectively. The blue boxes indicate the DTM multislot classes, and the
arrow indicates the compatibility direction. For example, if an MS supports class 11, the MS
must support classes 10, 9, 6, and 5. If an MS supports class 33, the MS must support classes 32,
31, 11, 10, 9, 6 and 5.
Figure 3-1 Incremental support of DTM multislot classes
Figure 3-2 Incremental support of HMC DTM multislot classes

NOTE:
In Figure 3-1 and Figure 3-2:
 Rx: Maximum number of downlink timeslots for a multislot class
 Tx: Maximum number of uplink timeslots for a multislot class
 Sum: Maximum number of concurrent uplink and downlink timeslots for a multislot class

Huawei BSCs differentiate channel allocation depending on DTM multislot classes:

 DTM channel allocation: intended for classes 5, 6, 9, and 10
 Class 11 DTM channel allocation
 HMC DTM channel allocation: intended for classes 31, 32, and 33

DTM Channel Allocation

When SUPPORTDTM(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to SUPPORT(Support), the BSC can allocate

channels to MSs of DTM multislot classes 5, 6, 9, and 10. Class 6 maps onto DTM classes 5.
Class 10 and higher map onto DTM class 9.
For an MS of DTM class 5, the BSC can allocate only one PDCH on the uplink or downlink, that
is, TCH + 1 PDCH (uplink) + 1 PDCH (downlink).
For an MS of DTM class 9, the BSC can allocate a maximum of two PDCHs on the downlink,
that is, TCH + 1 PDCH (uplink) + 2 PDCHs (downlink).
TCH refers to traffic channels and PDCH refers to packet data channels.
Figure 3-3 shows the DTM multislot models for classes 5, 6, 9, and 10.
Figure 3-3 DTM Multislot models for classes 5, 6, 9, and 10

Class 11 DTM Channel Allocation

When CLASS11DTM(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to SUPPORT(Support), the BSC can allocate

channels to MSs of DTM multislot class 11. In addition to DTM multislot models for classes 5
and 9, an MS of DTM class 11 supports the following channel combination: TCH + 1 PDCH
(downlink) + 2 PDCHs (uplink). An MS of DTM multislot class 11 better supports uplink-
preferred services, such as uploading videos for sharing.
Figure 3-4 shows the DTM multislot models for class 11.
Figure 3-4 DTM multislot models for class 11 (uplink preferred services with the EDA feature enabled)

NOTE:
After the EDA feature is enabled, the network allocates multiple uplink timeslots to an MS, and the MS monitors all
the PDCHs corresponding to the allocated timeslots. If the MS detects that an uplink state flag (USF) is allocated to
itself on an allocated PDCH, the MS can use the uplink blocks corresponding to this PDCH and other allocated
PDCHs with larger timeslot numbers.

The DTM multislot models for class 11 are the same as those for classes 9 and 10 when any of
the following conditions is met:
 Downlink-preferred services are performed.
 Neutral services are performed.
 The EDA feature is disabled.

HMC DTM Channel Allocation

Class 31 and higher are called HMC DTM. When HMCDTM(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to
SUPPORT(Support),the BSC can allocate channels to HMC DTM services. An MS in a call
can occupy a maximum of three PDCHs on either the uplink or the downlink. That is, the
channels allocated to the MS can be TCH + 3 PDCHs (downlink) + 1 PDCH (uplink) or TCH +
1 PDCH (downlink) + 3 PDCHs (uplink).
Figure 3-5 shows the DTM multislot models for class 31.

Figure 3-6 shows the DTM multislot models for classes 32 and 33.
Figure 3-6 DTM multislot models for classes 32 and 33 (uplink preferred services with the EDA feature enabled)

The DTM multislot models for classes 32 and 33 are the same as those for class 31 when any of
the following conditions is met:
 Downlink-preferred services are performed.
 Neutral services are performed.
 The EDA feature is disabled.

3.2 DTM Channel Allocation Algorithm

With DTM, the BSC can allocate channels to an MS in the combination TCH/F+PDCH or
TCH/H+PDCH, where TCH/H refers to half-rate TCHs, and TCH/F refers to full-rate TCHs.
Channel allocation in DTM mode must be in compliance with the DTM multislot capability of
an MS. DTM CS services can adopt any of the supported speech coding schemes.
After obtaining the DTM multislot capability of an MS, the BSC allocates channels to the MS
based on the following principles:
 The BSC chooses dynamic or static PDCHs and their adjacent TCHs as a candidate channel
group according to the DTM multislot capability of the MS. Even if the number of PDCHs
in the channel group does not meet the DTM multislot capability, the BSC still regards the
channel group as a candidate channel group. TCHs in the candidate channel group can be
idle or occupied by MSs that will enter DTM mode.
 If the BSC finds occupied TCHs and their adjacent available PDCHs, the BSC
preferentially allocates these TCHs and PDCHs to the MS.
 If the BSC finds only idle TCHs and their adjacent PDCHs, the BSC preferentially allocates
the channel group with the most PDCHs. If an MS is processing CS services before entering
DTM mode, the BSC transfers the ongoing CS services to idle TCHs by using the DTM
assignment procedure rather than the handover procedure.
 If DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On) and adjacent PDCHs do not meet
the DTM multislot capability or no PDCH is adjacent to TCHs, the BSC dynamically
converts idle TCHs to PDCHs. The BSC then allocates the PDCHs that meet the DTM
multislot capability to the MS for DTM services.
If multiple channel groups meet the DTM multislot capability, the BSC preferentially
allocates the TCH occupied by the MS and PDCHs adjacent to this TCH.
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), the BSC allocates channels
for DTM services according to the policies specified by the
DTMCSAllocPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter. The weights of factors indicated by the
values of DTMCSAllocPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) are as follows:
 DTMMULTI(Allocation): Multislot capability requirement of DTM PS services >
Capacity requirement of DTM CS services > Quality requirement of DTM CS services
> Management requirement of DTM CS services
 CAPACITY(Capacity): Capacity requirement of DTM CS services > Multislot
capability requirement of DTM PS services > Quality requirement of DTM CS
services > Management requirement of DTM CS services
 QUALITY(Quality): Quality requirement of DTM CS services > Capacity
requirement of DTM CS services > Multislot capability requirement of DTM PS
services > Management requirement of DTM CS services
 MANAGEMENT1(Management 1): Management requirement of DTM CS services
> Multislot capability requirement of DTM PS services > Capacity requirement of
DTM CS services > Quality requirement of DTM CS services
 MANAGEMENT2(Management 2): Management requirement of DTM CS services
> Capacity requirement of DTM CS services > Quality requirement of DTM CS
services > Multislot capability requirement of DTM PS services
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), the BSC preferentially
allocates TCH/Hs or TCH/Fs for DTM services according to the policies specified by the
DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter. If the BSC preferentially allocates
TCH/Hs for DTM services, the DTM service capacity can be improved. If the BSC
preferentially allocates TCH/Fs for DTM services, the speech quality of DTM services can
be ensured. If the policies specified by DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) conflict
with those specified by other parameters, the BSC follows the policies specified by other
parameters. For example, if the core network does not support TCH/Hs but
DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) specifies that TCH/Hs are preferred, the
configuration of DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) does not take effect. If
TCH/Hs are required to improve cell capacity but
DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) specifies that TCH/Fs are preferred, the
configuration of DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) does not take effect.
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On) in a concentric cell:
 If the BSC expects to allocate channels in the overlaid (or underlaid) subcell for both
CS and PS services, the BSC preferentially allocates these channels for DTM services
according to the subcell in which TCHs are allocated for CS services.
 If the BSC expects to allocate channels in the overlaid subcell for CS services and
channels in the underlaid subcell for PS services, the BSC rejects the DTM requests
from the MS and processes only CS services. This also occurs if the BSC expects to
allocate channels in the underlaid subcell for CS services and channels in the overlaid
subcell for PS services.
After a DTM service connection is established, channels occupied by DTM services are
processed according to the following principles:
 In DTM mode, a PDCH can be shared by MSs.
 GPRS/EGPRS services in DTM mode can meet their QoS requirements.
 If DYNCHNPREEMPTLEV(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to LEVEL0(Preempt all dynamic
TCHFs), LEVEL1(No preempt of CCHs), or LEVEL2(No preempt of service TCHF)
and channels occupied by DTM services can be preempted, CS services preferentially
preempt non-DTM channels. This has the same impact as preempting other candidate
channels or does not affect channel continuity.
To protect PDCHs for DTM services during PDCH preemption, the
DYNCHNPREEMPTLEV(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter provides the following new
policies:
 LEVEL3(No preempt of dynamic PDCHs): CS services cannot preempt dynamic
PDCHs that carry DTM services.
 LEVEL4(No preempt of both dynamic PDCHs and CCHs): CS services cannot
preempt dynamic PDCHs that carry DTM services or control channels (CCHs).
 If high-priority CS services can preempt TCHs occupied by low-priority CS services and
DTM CS services have low priorities, high-priority CS services can preempt TCHs
occupied by DTM CS services. If multiple ongoing low-priority CS services in DTM and
non-DTM modes have the same priority:
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), high-priority CS
services preferentially preempt TCHs occupied by CS services in non-DTM mode.
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to OFF(Off), high-priority CS
services randomly preempt TCHs occupied by CS services in DTM or non-DTM
mode.
After a DTM service connection is established, if
DTMIMMAPPLYSLAVEABIS(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), the BSC can immediately
allocate more Abis bandwidth to the DTM call, improving the encoding performance of the
DTM call. In contrast, the BSC allocates more Abis bandwidth to a common call only when the
PS coding scheme used by the call changes.

3.3 DTM-Related Procedures

3.3.1 GPRS Signaling Transmission on the Main DCCH in Dedicated

Mode
When DTM is supported, the MS can send or receive GPRS signaling messages, such as GPRS
mobility management (GMM) signaling messages generated during cell update or routing area
(RA) update in CS dedicated mode. There are two methods of doing this.
In the first method, the MS first enters the DTM to establish the uplink and downlink temporary
block flows (TBFs). After transmitting GPRS signaling messages, the MS leaves the DTM and
enters dedicated mode again. This method is time-consuming and decreases channel resource
usage because PS resources must be requested first.
In the second method, the main dedicated control channel (DCCH) is used to transmit GRPS
signaling messages in dedicated mode, as shown in Figure 3-7. This method can accelerate the
GPRS signaling transmission and better utilize channel resources. When the MS is in dedicated
mode, GPRS signaling messages are encapsulated as logical link control (LLC) protocol data
units (PDUs) in compliance with LLC protocols, and then the LLC PDUs are sent to the radio
resource (RR) entity for processing. The detailed procedure is as follows:
 In the uplink, the MS encapsulates an LLC PDU in a new Layer 3 message. The Layer 3
message contains the protocol identifier GPRS Transparent Transport Protocol (GTTP). The
MS sends the message using the existing Layer 2 mechanisms to the BSC over the main
DCCH. The BSC extracts the Temporary Logical Link Identity (TLLI) and the LLC PDU,
which are then encapsulated into a Base Station Subsystem GPRS Protocol (BSSGP) UL-
UNITDATA.
 In the downlink, upon receiving a BSSGP PDU, the BSC can identify whether the PDU
contains signaling information. If the length of the LLC PDU meets length requirements
and the BSS has an RR connection to the addressed MS with the international mobile
subscriber identity (IMSI), the BSC sends the GPRS signaling message over the main
DCCH.
Figure 3-7 shows GPRS signaling transmission on the main DCCH in dedicated mode.
Figure 3-7 Using the main DCCH to transmit GPRS signaling in dedicated mode

GPRS signaling transmission on the main DCCH in dedicated mode has the following
restrictions:
 The MS must be in dedicated mode rather than in DTM mode.
 The main DCCH can transmit GPRS signaling messages, but not GPRS data.
 The number of link access procedure on the Dm channel (LAPDm) frames disassembled
from a GPRS signaling message must be smaller than the value specified by the network.
The value is determined by MAX_LAPDm in SI6. MAX_LAPDm has three bits and its
value ranges from 5 to 12. By default, MAX_LAPDm is 5.

3.3.2 DTM Establishment

Uplink PS Establishment in Dedicated Mode

In dedicated mode, if the BSS and MS support DTM, the MS can send a DTM Request message
on the main DCCH to establish an uplink PS connection. If the BSS does not need to re-allocate
CS resources (that is, the BSS uses the original TCH to carry speech in DTM mode), it sends a
Packet Assignment message to allocate PS resources to the MS. Figure 3-8 shows the procedure.
Figure 3-8 Uplink PS establishment in dedicated mode without reallocating CS resources
If the BSS needs to reallocate the CS resources when allocating PS resources (DTM channel
allocation is not applicable due to existing channel distribution), the BSS sends a DTM
Assignment Command message on the main DCCH to the MS after reallocating the CS
resources. If the MS successfully establishes the new CS connection, it sends an Assignment
Complete message on the new main DCCH, as shown in Figure 3-9. If the MS fails to establish the
new CS connection, it sends an Assignment Failure message on the old main DCCH, as shown in
Figure 3-10.

Figure 3-9 Uplink PS connection establishment in dedicated mode with CS resources reallocated and new CS
connections established

Figure 3-10 Uplink PS connection establishment in dedicated mode with CS resources reallocated and new CS
connections failed

Downlink PS Establishment in Dedicated Mode

In dedicated mode, if the MS is in the GMM Ready state, the BSS needs to establish a downlink
TBF after receiving a downlink PDU from the SGSN. If the BSS does not need to reallocate CS
resources, it sends a Packet Assignment message on the main DCCH to the MS. Figure 3-11 shows
the procedure.
Figure 3-11 Downlink PS establishment in dedicated mode and GMM ready state

If the BSS needs to reallocate CS resources when allocating PS resources, the BSS sends a DTM
Assignment Command message on the new main DCCH to the MS after reallocating the CS
resources. If the MS successfully establishes the new CS connection, it sends an Assignment
Complete message on the new main DCCH. If the MS fails to establish the new CS connection,
it sends an Assignment Failure message on the old main DCCH. The procedure for
reestablishing the downlink PS connection between network elements is the same as the
procedure for reestablishing the uplink PS connection.
If the MS is in dedicated mode and GMM standby state, the BSS sends a Packet Notification
message on the main DCCH to the MS after receiving a packet paging message from the SGSN.
The MS then sends an LLC frame as a response to the packet paging. The SGSN starts to send
the downlink information after receiving the paging response from the MS. Figure 3-12 shows the
procedure.
Figure 3-12 Downlink PS establishment in dedicated mode and GMM standby state

CS Establishment in Packet Transfer Mode

In packet transfer mode, the packet session must be aborted before the MS or the network
initiates a CS connection request. When the CS connection is established, the MS enters
dedicated mode. The PS connection is then established over the main DCCH occupied by the CS
resources. This PS connection establishment procedure is the same as that for uplink or downlink
PS connection establishment in dedicated mode.

3.3.3 DTM Release

CS Release in DTM Mode

In DTM mode, if the CS connection is released, the MS must release the PS resources.

PS Release in DTM Mode

The procedure for releasing a TBF by an MS in DTM mode is the same as that for releasing an
uplink or downlink TBF for common PS services. During CS services in DTM mode, if the last
TBF is released by an MS, the MS enters dedicated mode.

3.3.4 Handover in DTM Mode

The decision on when to change the serving cell of a DTM-capable MS is made based on the CS
measurement report.
In an intra-cell handover, the MS releases the PS resources and leaves DTM with the PS
connection interrupted. Then, the MS enters dedicated mode on the new CS resource,
reestablishes the PS connection, and enters DTM mode again.
In an inter-cell handover, the MS releases the PS resources and leaves DTM with the PS
connection interrupted. Then, the MS enters dedicated mode in the new cell, reads the system
information messages, makes a cell update or RA update, reestablishes the PS connection, and
enters DTM mode again. Figure 3-13 shows the procedure.
Figure 3-13 Inter-cell handover in DTM mode

In DTM mode, more restrictions are imposed on CS handovers to retain the continuity of CS and
PS services and to prevent CS handovers from interrupting PS services.
When DTMCSHOOPTSW(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to NO(No), CS handovers in DTM mode
must be forced handovers, emergency handovers, or fast movement handovers.
When DTMCSHOOPTSW(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to YES(Yes), CS handovers in DTM mode
caused by the following reasons are not allowed:
 Cell load sharing
 Traffic sharing in a concentric cell or enhanced dual-band network
 TCH/F-to-TCH/H handovers due to high cell load, TCH/F-to-TCH/H handovers due to
insufficient Abis links, and TCH/H-to-TCH/F handovers due to low cell load
 Handovers due to dynamic adjustment from TCH/F to TCH/H, from TCH/H to TCH/F,
from TCH to SDCCH, and from SDCCH to TCH
 Channel repacking
During establishment of a DTM service connection, links for CS services are established prior to
those for PS services. After links for CS services are established and before links for PS services
are established, the DTM call is in unstable state. Handovers triggered during this period must be
delayed. If links for PS services fail to be established,
DtmChOccupySupplyStatSw(BSC6900,BSC6910) controls whether to measure handover-
related counters for CS services.

3.3.5 Cell Update, RA Update, and LA Update in DTM Mode

If a DTM-capable MS is in dedicated mode, it can perform cell updates, RA updates, and
location area (LA) updates on the main DCCH to reduce the load of packet resources. If LLC
PDUs cannot be transmitted on the main DCCH, they are transmitted on TBFs.
If both the RA and LA of a DTM-capable MS in idle mode change, either of the following
combined RA and LA updates is performed:
 An RA update and then an LA update
 An LA update and then an RA update
 If DTMUPDATEOPTITYPE(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to
SDCCH_REL_DELAY(SDCCH Release Delay), the BSC sends an RA Update
Accept message to the MS on the SDCCH. If the BSC receives a DTM Request
message on the SDCCH, the BSC delays releasing the SDCCH, as shown in Figure 3-14.
 If DTMUPDATEOPTITYPE(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to
RAU_ACC_SEND_DELAY(RAU ACC Send Delay), the BSC sends an RA Update
Accept message to the MS in downlink packet immediate assignment only after the
SDCCH is released, as shown in Figure 3-15.
 If DTMUPDATEOPTITYPE(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to NO_DELAY(No Delay), the
BSC releases the SDCCH and delivers the RA Update Accept message in a timely
manner.
Figure 3-14 Mobility management procedure when an RA update is complete before an LA update

Figure 3-15 Mobility management procedure when an LA update is complete before an RA update

3.3.6 Paging Coordination

The BSC can control the paging response of an MS using the paging coordination function rather
than based on the setting of the NMO(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter. This enables the MS to enter
the DTM to establish CS and PS connections simultaneously.
 When an MS is in packet transfer mode, the BSC can send a CS Paging message on the
PACCH even if the NMO(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter is set to NMOII(Network
Operation Mode II) or NMOIII(Network Operation Mode III). Therefore, the MS does
not miss any CS Paging messages.
 When an MS is in dedicated mode and the system supports DTM, the BSC sends a Packet
Notification message on the main DCCH after receiving a PS Paging message. Therefore,
the MS does not miss any PS Paging messages.

5 Network Impact

5.1 System Capability

None

5.2 Network Performance

 Enabling DTM has no impacts on the performance of non-DTM PS services. The following
KPIs remain unchanged after DTM is enabled except in case of many DTM users:
Uplink TBF establishment success rate (non-DTM call)
Downlink TBF establishment success rate (non-DTM call)
Uplink TBF congestion rate (non-DTM call)
Downlink TBF congestion rate (non-DTM call)
Uplink TBF drop rate (non-DTM call)
Downlink TBF drop rate (non-DTM call)
Average uplink LLC throughput rate per user (non-DTM call)
Average downlink LLC throughput rate per user (non-DTM call)
 Enabling DTM has the following impacts on the performance of DTM PS services:
 In DTM mode, MSs must be allocated consecutive TCHs and PDCHs during channel
allocation for DTM PS services. In addition, DTM calls are affected by users'
behaviors. For example, when a CS release or CS handover occurs in DTM mode, the
DTM service fails. The following KPIs deteriorate after DTM is enabled compared
with those for non-DTM PS services:
Uplink TBF establishment success rate (DTM call)
Downlink TBF establishment success rate (DTM call)
Uplink TBF congestion rate (DTM call)
Downlink TBF congestion rate (DTM call)
Uplink TBF drop rate (DTM call)
Downlink TBF drop rate (DTM call)
Average uplink LLC throughput rate per user (DTM call)
Average downlink LLC throughput rate per user (DTM call)
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), using the optimized
channel allocation algorithm for DTM services decreases the DTM TBF congestion
rate. If the penetration rate of DTM-capable MSs is no more than 30% on a network,
setting DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On) has the following
impacts:
The TBF congestion rate for DTM services approaches that for non-DTM services.
Both the uplink and downlink DTM TBF congestion rates decrease by more than 50%.
If the impacts of CS releases or CS handovers and the scenarios with many DTM users
are not considered, the performance of other DTM services is similar to that of non-
DTM services.
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), PDCH conversion may
be required to meet the DTM multislot capability of an MS. As a result, the delay in
establishing DTM PS connections may be prolonged.
 Enabling DTM has the following impacts on the performance of CS services:
 Establishing DTM services will cause an increase in the number of PDCHs. The
proportion of half-rate traffic increases and the high quality indicator (HQI) decreases
with the increase in the number of PDCHs. If the DTM traffic volume is large, the
number of PDCHs increases significantly. As a result, the proportion of half-rate traffic
increases and the HQI decreases significantly.
 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), PDCH conversion may
be required to meet the DTM multislot capability of an MS. As a result, the delay in
establishing DTM CS connections may be prolonged.
 Enabling DTM has the following impacts on the BSC processing capability:
The CPU usage of each processing board of the BSC, DPUc, or DPUf board increases by a
maximum of 5%.

NOTE:
The DPUc and DPUf boards are supported only by BSC6900.

6 Engineering Guidelines

6.1 When to Use DTM

Use DTM on networks where DTM-capable MSs exist.

6.2 Required Information

DTM requires the support of MSs. Therefore, before deploying the DTM feature, collect the
following counters to check whether MSs on the network support DTM, Class 11 DTM, and
HMC DTM, respectively:
 CELL.SPT.DTM.CALL.NUM
 DTM.EGPRS.MULTISLOT.CLASS11
 HIGH.MULTISLOT.CAPABILITY.CLASS30TO45

Average uplink LLC throughput - The number of PDCHs allocated

rate per user (DTM call) to a DTM call is at least one fewer
than that allocated to a non-DTM
call. Therefore, the average uplink
LLC throughput rate per user

to 80% of the average uplink LLC
throughput rate per user (non-
DTM call).

6.8 Parameter Optimization

 If the BSC separately allocates PDCHs for EGPRS and GPRS services, configure some
dynamic or static EGPRS PDCHs on multiple nonconsecutive TRXs to increase the
throughput of EGPRS DTM LLC PDUs. If the EGPRS PDCHs are configured on one TRX
or multiple consecutive TRXs, idle TCHs may be adjacent to fewer EGPRS PDCHs. If
there are no consecutive PDCHs, EGPRS subscribers cannot perform DTM PS services and
EGPRS services are degraded to GPRS services. This decreases the throughput of EGPRS
services.
 When GPRS dedicated channels are configured, it is recommended that
GprsPdchSynMode(BSC6900,BSC6910) be set to ON(On) so that the synchronization of
GPRS PDCHs is accelerated. This avoids DTM establishment failures when no PDCHs are
available due to low synchronization of GPRS PDCHs, thereby improving the DTM access
success rate. You do not need to configure this parameter for EGPRS channels.

NOTICE:
The cell processing PS services resets when you adjust the
GprsPdchSynMode(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter.

 When DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to OFF(Off) in a concentric cell, do not

set IUOCHNTRAN(BSC6900,BSC6910) to CONVERT0(Only convert at UL) or
CONVERT1(Only convert at OL) because these settings allow DTM PS services to be
performed either in only the underlaid or overlaid subcell. However, DTM CS services may
be performed only or preferentially in a subcell different from that specified by
IUOCHNTRAN(BSC6900,BSC6910). This causes ping-pong handovers.
 To increase the DTM establishment success rate and the LLC throughput rate of DTM
services, set DTMOptiSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) to ON(On).
 To increase the DTM CS service capacity, set DTMCSAllocPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) to
CAPACITY(Capacity), in which case the DTM multislot capability and speech quality
will not be optimal. To improve the speech quality of DTM CS services, set
DTMCSAllocPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) to QUALITY(Quality), in which case the DTM
CS service capacity and DTM multislot capability will not be optimal. To improve the
DTM multislot capability and further increase the DTM PS service rate, set
DTMCSAllocPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) to DTMMULTI(Allocation), in which case the
DTM CS service capacity and speech quality of DTM CS services will not be optimal.

NOTE:
Modifying DTMCSAllocPolicy affects channel allocation for only DTM services.

 To increase the usage efficiency of DTM channels and the DTM establishment success rate,
set DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) to HRfirst(HalfRate first) so that DTM CS
services are carried by TCH/Hs. To improve the speech quality of DTM CS services, set
DTMCSVersionPolicy(BSC6900,BSC6910) to FRfirst(FullRate first) so that DTM CS
services are carried by TCH/Fs. However, in this situation, the DTM access success rate and
DTM establishment success rate decrease.
 In DTM mode, it is recommended that DTMIMMAPPLYSLAVEABIS(BSC6900,BSC6910)
be set to ON(On) to improve the encoding performance of DTM calls.
