ABSTRACT

RISK FACTOR ANALYSIS OF LOW BIRTH WEIGHT HISTORY AND MOTHER’S


KNOWLEDGE OF NUTRITION WITH MALNUTRITION INCIDENT IN TODDLERS
AT THE COASTAL AREA OF KENDARI

Malnutrition in early life will seriously impact the process of growth and development, an infant
will become malnourished if not addressed immediately. According to Southeast Sulawesi Health
Office there are 20 cases of malnutrition in Kendari, which means Kendari is in the red zone. This
study aim to analyze the risk factor of low birth weight history and mother’s knowledge of nutrition
with malnutrition incident in toddlers at the coastal area of Kendari.

Method: This study is an observational research with case control design. The sample consists of toddlers
aged 6-59 months with malnutrition status based on medical records on October 2018 in Public Health
Center Abeli, Mata and Benu-Benua as the case group while the control group are toddlers of similar age
with good nutritional status. There are 64 samples consisted of 16 samples of case and 32 samples of control.
Data of low birth weight was obtained from medical records in Public Health Center Abeli, Mata and Benu-
Benua. A questionnaire is used to measure the mother’s knowledge of nutrition. The data is analyzed by
Odd Ratio with p-value <0,05 and CI 95%

Result: Bivariate analysis showed the risk of toddler’s with low birth weight (p-value < α OR=5,923 CI
95%:1,724-20,346) and mother’s knowledge of nutrition (p-value <α OR=9,533 CI 95%:2,361-38,501)

Conclusion: Low birth weight history and mother’s knowledge of nutrition was a risk factor of malnutrition
in toddler at the coastal area in Kendari.
