Task 1
What do these pronouns refer to?

In Europe men don’t usually wear skirts. But the Scottish national costume for men is
a kind of skirt. It is called a kilt. The Scottish likes to be different. They are also proud
of their country and its history, and they feel that the kilt is part of that history. That’s
why the men still wear kilts at old-style dances and on national holidays. They believe
they are wearing the same clothes that Scottish men always used to wear.
That’s what they believe. However, kilts are not really so old. Before 1730,
Scottish men wore a long shirt and blanket around their shoulders. These clothes got in
the way when the men started to work in factories. So, in 170 a factory owner changed
the blanket into a skirt: the kilt. That’s how the first kilt was made.
Then, in the late 1700s Scottish soldiers in the British Army began to wear
kilts. One reason for this was national feeling: the Scottish soldiers wanted to look
different from the English soldiers. The British Army probably had a different reason:
a Scottish soldier in a kilt was always easy to find! The Scottish soldiers fought very
hard and became famous. The kilt was part of that fame, and in the early 1800s men
all around Scotland began to wear kilts.
These kilts had colorful stripes going up and down and across. In the 1700s
and early 1800s, the color of the stripes had no special meaning. Men sometimes
owned kilts in several different colors. But later colors became important to Scottish
families. By about 1850, most families had special colors for their kilts. For example,
men from the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes. Scottish
people often believe that the colors of the kilt are part of their family history. In fact,
each family just chose the colors they liked best.
This is not the story you will hear today if you are in Scotland. Most Scottish
people still believe that kilts are as old as Scotland and that the colors are as old as the
Scottish families. Sometimes feelings are stronger than facts.

Task 1

Read this passage from Girl Against the Jungle, by Monica Vincent. Try to infer the
answers to the questions below. Underline the words or phrases that helped you.

Girl Against the Jungle

I woke up very late the next morning. The sun was high in the sky, so I got up quickly and
started to walk along the bank of the stream. I still followed the rules carefully. First I poked my
stick into the undergrowth. Then I took a step or two. I watched for snakes and spiders. I
listened for the sounds of danger. I listened to the birds. My mother knew all about birds.

“The birds can tell you about the jungle,” she told me. “Listen to them.”

She told me a lot about birds, so I recognized the terrible cries in the sky. I recognized the big,
black wings and the ugly, bare heads. I knew those sharp, hungry beaks. King vultures! The
biggest vultures in the world. They don’t kill. They only watch and wait. They fly over the jungle
and look for dead bodies. The sky was black with their wings. They flew down between the
trees. There was food on the ground – dead flesh. It was the passengers from the plane. I didn’t
see the bodies, but I knew. The vultures told me.

I didn’t feel sad. I didn’t feel afraid. I still didn’t feel any pain. I walked through the jungle, but
I walked slowly. Very slowly.

PRACTICE 7
Task 1

Read the following text carefully, and guess the meaning of the words in bold.

THE MANAGEMENT OF Companies

In small company management, it is the job of the owner to make all his own
decisions, or possible two or three people if the company is a partnership.
In large companies the structure of management is similar in most places in the
world. The chairman or president is the head of the company, its main representative, and
is responsible for how the company is run. In some cases s/he may be the owner of the
company, in others, s/he is elected by a board of directors who decide on the overall
policies of the company at regular meetings called board meetings.
The directors are generally elected by people who have shares in the company.
They may be elected because they have a specialized knowledge of the industry, or because
they have successfully run other companies, but they can also be elected for reasons of
prestige – they have a famous name which adds to the company’s reputation. Actors, sports
people and politicians often hold directorship of large organizations.
Under the directors are the many departments and departmental heads who run the
day-to-day activities of the company and they are usually responsible to the managing
directors (MD), who, as her/his title indicates is both overall manager and director of the
company. Her/his role is possibly the most important as s/he is the link between the board
of directors and the management heads of departments. Generally, managing directors are
appointed not elected, and are often brought in from other companies because of their
successful managerial records.
The company will also have a chief accountant, who controls all the financial
departments and a Company Secretary who handles both the legal and financial activities of
the company.
The performance of a company can only be as good as its management. If the
optimum level of production is not achieved, if there are staff problems, if new technology
affects the competitiveness of the company or if there is economic change in the country,
then it is only management that can anticipate – predict what will happen – and adapt the
organization to new situations. No one else in the company is in the situation to do that.
