INTERVENTIONS IN IMPROVING THE MASTERY OF BASIC

MULTIPLICATION FACTS OF GRADE 6-A PUPILS OF CABULOAN ELEMENTARY

SCHOOL SY 2019 – 2020

I. CONTENT AND RATIONALE

Mastery of basic mathematics facts is very important in teaching of

Mathematics in the elementary level. However, it is frustrating to note that

despite all the efforts of the primary grade teachers in teaching the basic math

facts to pupils, still many of them do not have mastery of the basic facts.

The proponent of this action research conducted a pre-test numeracy among

the Grade 6-A pupils of Cabuloan Elementary School using the Division

Testing Tool. The proponent found out, that majority of the pupils have not

mastered the math facts, particularly the multiplication facts.

The results of the pre-test numeracy in multiplication which was administered

by the proponent to Grade 6-A pupils of Cabuloan Elementary School in June

24, 2019 revealed that 9 out of 32 pupils or 28.125% have mastered the basic

multiplication facts, 12 out of 32 pupils or 37.50% have nearly numerates, and

11 out of 32 pupils or 34.375% have low mastery of the basic math facts.

Alarmed with the current problem of non-mastery in multiplication of basic

facts, the researcher prompted to conduct remediation thru applying

intervention materials to the pupils.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This action research focuses on the question, what are the interventions in

improving the mastery of basic multiplication facts of Grade 6-A pupils of

Cabuloan Elementary School School Year 2019 – 2020.

It specifically answers the following questions:

1. What intervention is most suited in improving the mastery of basic

multiplication facts of Grade 6-A pupils?

2. Is there a significant difference before and after having an intervention in

improving the mastery of basic multiplication facts of Grade 6-A pupils.

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION/ INTERVENTION/ STRATEGY

In order to improve my pupils’ mastery of basic multiplication facts, I will

implement three different strategies namely memorization of multiplication

table thru e-flash cards, use of multiplication worksheets, and accomplishing

M-1 window card daily for five minutes.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

a. PARTICIPANTS OF THE STUDY

Participants of this action research are the identified Grade 6-A pupils of

Cabuloan Elementary School School Year 2019 – 2020 who got low

mastery level on multiplication.

b. DATA COLLECTION

The research begins by administering numeracy pre-test to the Grade 6-A

pupils. After the administration, test item analysis will be done to identify the level

of numeracy skills of the students as well as mastery level of each item. A

Remediation Intervention Program will be conducted to those identified students.

The researcher will implement the three different strategies namely memorization

of multiplication table thru e-flash cards, use of multiplication worksheets, and

accomplishing M-1 window card daily for five minutes. A series of sessions will

be conducted every Friday. A post – test will be given by the end of January.

c. DATA ANALYSIS PLAN

In this study, the following statistical tools will be used:

1. The means are to be computed for the pre-test score and post-test score

2. T-test for independent samples is to be used in determining the significant

differences between the mean pre-test scores and between the mean post-test

scores.

VII. PLANS FOR DISSEMINATION

Disseminations of the results of this study are one of the main factors of

conducting this study. School learning action cell or SLAC sessions in Cabuloan

Elementary School is the first step in dissemination of the result of this study

followed by any invitations to different schools (elementary and secondary).
