PREFACE
This program addresses the goal of the K TO 12 English Program which is “to develop
the learners to become functionally literate. Hence, it emphasizes that reading presents learners
with a variety of encounters that enriches not only their reading proficiency but also their very
character. The thought – provoking , globally relevant , and learner – friendly reading texts from
various authentic, classic and the accompanying lessons and activities which are aligned with
the K to 12 learning standards , aim to provide pupils action –packed, brain – teasing and life –
changing encounters with themselves, their community and their world. Reading Comprehension
is an essential skill for learners of English. For most of the learners, it is the most important skill
to master in order to ensure success in learning. With strengthened reading skills, learners of
English tend to make greater progress in other areas of language learning. Reading should be an
active, fluent process that involves the reader and the reading material in building meaning.
A lot of our learners know how to read. But reading is not the same as reading with
comprehension. By learning to read, the learners are just decoding words. But not actually
understanding words. But not actually understanding them. Reading comprehension requires a
long term strategy in which all the reading skills (phonics, fluency and vocabulary) will
contribute to success. If a pupil has strong comprehension skills, it would be a great help for
him/her in all the other subjects and in the personal and professional lives. To achieve this, the
DepEd through the implementation of the k-12 Basic Education Curriculum has strengthened its
ECARP (Every Child a Reader Program) wherein it has already been institutionalized.
In connection with this, to determine the reading abilities and needs of Grade 3 of
Cacarong Bata Elementary School, the teacher conducted oral reading test last July 18, 2018. As
a result of the given test 20 out of 48 pupils are in poor comprehension. This is the reason why
the teachers concluded that the pupils have reading problem in English which became the basis
for planning their classroom instruction.
In line with the above reality, it is important to take consideration in order to solve the
problem and to improve pupils’ achievement in reading comprehension. One thing that must be
taken into account is the intervention in teaching reading.
The writer conducted this study for the purpose of improving the Grade 3 pupils, now in
Grade 4, in reading comprehension, especially in comprehending the main idea, specific
information, word meaning, and textual reference.

Proceedings:
The meeting started at 3:00 PM at the Principal’s Office. Sir Harold King B.
Dimla, the team leader, requested the team members to share their experiences and
gave their progress report with the pupils. Each facilitator was given the chance to
share their elusive and unforgettable experiences despite the difficulties they had with
their pupils. Majority mentioned that even though it’s quite difficult, teaching the
pupils with their different reading abilities is a worthy journey for them.
Ma’am Bienvenida T. Valcos reminded everyone to always monitor the
attendance of the pupils and give proper action for those who miss CIP sessions. She
also asked everyone to checked the take home activities, to monitor if the parents had
follow up reading activities at home.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 PM.

Data Analysis and Interpretation of Pre and Tests for every Sessions
and Evaluation for CI Beneficiaries
Pre-Test
The graph exhibits the pre-test results of Grade 4 Reading Comprehension Test.
The bar graph shows that there are 25 pupils who got 3 points, 21 got 2 points 25 got 1
point and 4 pupils got no point during the Pre-Oral Reading and Comprehension Test
It can be noted from the graph that majority of the pupils obtained unsatisfactorily
reading performance.
These implied that 50 pupils need the support of the parents and teachers to further
improve their reading comprehension. Intensive interventions are necessary.
Post-Test
After each session, evaluation was done. It can be noted from the graph that majority
of the pupils obtained very satisfactory performance.
These implied that the pupils reading performance exceeds by 10-15% of the planned
targets.

Pre-Test
The graph exhibits the pre-test results of level 1,Non Reader Category.
The bar graph shows that there are 3 pupils got the score of 8, 2 pupils got 6, 1 got 4, 2
and 0, while 3 pupils got 1.
It can be noted from the graph that majority of the pupils obtained unsatisfactorily
reading performance.
These implied that almost one half of the population of this category need the support
of the parents and teachers to further improve their reading comprehension. Intensive
interventions are necessary.
Post-Test
The graph reveals the post-test results of level 1, non reader category.
The bar graph shows that no one got the score of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. There are 2 pupil
got 11, 2 pupils got 12, 5 pupils got 13, 1 got 14 and 1 pupil got 15.
It can be noted from the graph that majority of the pupils obtained very satisfactory
performance.
These implied that the pupils reading performance exceeds by 10-15% of the planned
targets; from the previous range of performance exceeding targets by at least 5% but falls
short of what is considered an outstanding performance.
