Project PRICE
PREFACE

Project PRICE – a continuous improvement program of Cacarong Bata Elementary

School is designed to address the Department of Education’s Basic Education Program which
seeks to “produce holistically developed learners who have 21 st century skills and are prepared
for higher education, middle level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship”.

This program addresses the goal of the K TO 12 English Program which is “to develop
the learners to become functionally literate. Hence, it emphasizes that reading presents learners
with a variety of encounters that enriches not only their reading proficiency but also their very
character. The thought – provoking , globally relevant , and learner – friendly reading texts from
various authentic, classic and the accompanying lessons and activities which are aligned with
the K to 12 learning standards , aim to provide pupils action –packed, brain – teasing and life –
changing encounters with themselves, their community and their world. Reading Comprehension
is an essential skill for learners of English. For most of the learners, it is the most important skill
to master in order to ensure success in learning. With strengthened reading skills, learners of
English tend to make greater progress in other areas of language learning. Reading should be an
active, fluent process that involves the reader and the reading material in building meaning.

A lot of our learners know how to read. But reading is not the same as reading with
comprehension. By learning to read, the learners are just decoding words. But not actually
understanding words. But not actually understanding them. Reading comprehension requires a
long term strategy in which all the reading skills (phonics, fluency and vocabulary) will
contribute to success. If a pupil has strong comprehension skills, it would be a great help for
him/her in all the other subjects and in the personal and professional lives. To achieve this, the
DepEd through the implementation of the k-12 Basic Education Curriculum has strengthened its
ECARP (Every Child a Reader Program) wherein it has already been institutionalized.

In connection with this, to determine the reading abilities and needs of Grade 3 of
Cacarong Bata Elementary School, the teacher conducted oral reading test last July 18, 2018. As
a result of the given test 20 out of 48 pupils are in poor comprehension. This is the reason why
the teachers concluded that the pupils have reading problem in English which became the basis
for planning their classroom instruction.

In line with the above reality, it is important to take consideration in order to solve the
problem and to improve pupils’ achievement in reading comprehension. One thing that must be
taken into account is the intervention in teaching reading.

The writer conducted this study for the purpose of improving the Grade 3 pupils, now in
Grade 4, in reading comprehension, especially in comprehending the main idea, specific
information, word meaning, and textual reference.

Pupils reading comprehension shall be increased through 2-paragraph reading materials by 50% at the end of

BRIEF
BACKGROU
Cacarong Bata Elementary School molds the minds of our learners through holistic transformation. We pro
ND knowledge and skills that suit the needs of our learners through listening, speaking, reading and writing. We belie
that reading is one of the key factors that helps the learners to acquire knowledge equipped with basic skills but i
reality sometimes reading without comprehension leads to insufficient learnings. Last July 2019 the school condu
the Phil IRI oral Reading test in English. The results revealed that the grade three pupils got only 37% or 62 out o
203 pupils are good in reading comprehension. The results give the entire team the initiative to work on it to find

Agenda : Progress Report on the CIP and other Concerns

Proceedings:
The meeting started at 3:00 PM at the Principal’s Office. Sir Harold King B.
Dimla, the team leader, requested the team members to share their experiences and
gave their progress report with the pupils. Each facilitator was given the chance to
share their elusive and unforgettable experiences despite the difficulties they had with
their pupils. Majority mentioned that even though it’s quite difficult, teaching the
pupils with their different reading abilities is a worthy journey for them.
Ma’am Bienvenida T. Valcos reminded everyone to always monitor the
attendance of the pupils and give proper action for those who miss CIP sessions. She
also asked everyone to checked the take home activities, to monitor if the parents had
follow up reading activities at home.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 PM.

TALK WITH THE CUSTOMERS

August 16, 2019-Friday
The CI Project team had one by one reading session with Grade Four pupils who
attained poor reading comprehension during the Phil Iri pretest. Grade 4 Teachers have done
the test.

In the afternoon, results were tabulated and found out that 50 are still with poor
reading comprehension. The facilitator painstakingly took the challenge to be with the pupils
for the whole day session.
