II. Project Summary

The goal of this section is to present the reasons for doing this project as well as stating
the project’s objectives. In this section in particular it is very important to write
concisely and clearly.

The Gulayan Sa Paaralan Cum Literacy Park, BE 2018 Zaragosa ES Innovation is

an innovative solution targeting both the problem on malnutrition and low performance
on literacy. It is a combination of the Gulayan Project and the different subject areas in
literacy . This was conceptualized by the Project Manager to provide alternative solution
to the problems in the school on how to strategized “ Reading “ so that it will be loved
by the learners as well as by the stakeholders.Of course as usual there is the gulayan
garden which will be the venue for the project and inside it or along with it will be
landscaping projects which will house some reading materials ( localized ) to be read by
the struggling readers. Everything in the garden shall also have reading materials
hanged in it or even problem solving flashcards ( localized version) hang inside the
garden. The Reading Recovery Process shall be inculcated in this project but only those
who will form part of the school’s struggling readers shall undergo the recovery process.
Everyone will be accepted in the park as it will be open for all but the reading recovery
part shall be administered solely for the aforementioned readers. The reading recovery
process shall be done in partnership with the LGU Reading Teacher and the reading
teachers of the identified subject for reading recovery program. It will take three months
for the project on reading recovery to run and until such time that the Gulayan Cum
Literacy Park will already be completely full of reading materials. The project will cost an
estimated fund of Fifteen Thousand Pesos or more.
III. Project Background
Explain what needs/problems you are trying to solve, and why these needs/problems
are worth solving. You should also provide a brief setting and history behind the project.
This section should be no more than a page. Include references to supporting

elementary and secondary schools all over the country to implement the “Gulayan sa Paaralan”
project in support of the government’s hunger mitigation and poverty alleviation efforts
through issuing the DepEd Order # 295 S. 2007.

The former education chief said that hunger and malnutrition are two problems that
affect 19 percent or 3,268,000 families out of the 17,400,000 households in the country.
“Children of poor parents fail to complete their education because hunger and malnutrition
force them to drop out from school to help their parents earn a living,” Secretary Lapus said. He
stressed the wide implementation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan , and had even extended up to
the community.

A school-community food production project, the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” is a tie- up with the
“Programang Agrikultura Para sa Masa” of the Department of Agriculture (DA), which is being
implemented nationwide.

The Gulayan sa Paaralan initiative seeks to raise public awareness about health and
nutrition, and promote the economic benefits of establishing school, household and community
gardens. As they acquire hands-on experience at school, pupils and students will serve as
program multipliers, sharing their new knowledge about vegetable gardening with their families
and communities. Hence, the school gardens shall serve as food basket or main source of
commodities to sustain supplementary feeding.

“ Accordingly, production of selected varieties of vegetables shall be intensified and

sustained in schools to address deficiencies in protein ( legumes ) energy ( rootcrops) , vitamins
and iron ( malunggay, saluyot, gabi leaves , kangkong, kulitis, alugbati ang pechay ) , ”the
former DepEd Secretary added.

Truly, Zaragosa Elementary School has not only started this project in 2007 , but it had started
as early as in 1980’s as proven in the words of mouth of the alumni of the school . So, the
program has been sustained even the time before it was put into DepEd Order, the only
difference now is its levelling up . Now, the project is one of the most important part of
President Aquino’s hunger mitigation and poverty alleviation efforts and to help attain food
self-reliance and self– sufficiency and is now the most important project of Zaragosa ES because
of its great impact in the reading as well as in its combat to malnutrition and hunger.
