PROJECT REAP
READING ENHANCEMENT ADAPTIVE PROGRAM IN TIME OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC
I. Project Summary
In response to DepEd Memorandum No.048, s.2021, 2021, being Brigada
Pagbasa as part of Brigada Eskwela, our main goal in DepEd and as an educator is
to help all learners to read and become functionally literate. This project proposal
also aims to involve stakeholders to contribute to providing reading support to the
struggling learners of our community, particularly Grade 8 students.
Reading is part of an individual’s everyday life. It is the most important skill
to be mastered by a student because it is a requirement in the process of teaching
and learning. Inability to read and comprehend the lesson will contribute to the low
academic performance of a student.
It is inevitable that there are high school students who are still struggling to
read. One of the factors that we see as teachers are that they are not exposed to
reading materials because of the lack of resources and of course the lack of
instructional assistance from the family.
The main idea of this project is to bring the essence of school to the grade 8
struggling readers in the community through the help of well-oriented community
volunteers and will be facilitated by English reading teachers. The volunteers will
serve as the Learning Support Aides of teachers, they will be the reading teachers
of the community.
Identified struggling readers will be grouped according to the proximity of
their respective barangays. The learning area will be stationed in a certain Pag-asa
Gymnasium to cater at least five (5) learners per one hour session. The team will
then proceed to the next station. A barangay official, assigned community
volunteers, and some grade 8 teachers will be present in the site to assist.
All necessary safeguards will be observed according to the rules
implemented by IATF to secure the safety of the persons and clients involved.
With this pandemic, learners are forced to study at the comfort of their
home, and also in a self-learning mode, which the struggling readers will not be
able to do because they need assistance in reading and understanding the words.
Parents who are busy attending their jobs and family members who are also doing
their modules will have a full hand to still teach their other siblings.
Grade 8 teachers, the barangay and community volunteers will be working
together to achieve the goal of Brigada Pagbasa even in this time of pandemic.
Following the strict guidelines set by IATF, the school will be brought to learners’
community.
b. Project Deliverables
Pre-Reading Assessment
Grade 8 learners whose general average from their previous grade
level of 83 to 75 will be given a pre-reading assessment provided by English
Supervisor.
Intervention
The intervention material is composed of twenty one (21) lessons.
Lessons included are word families, the association of word families to
phrases, sentences, rhymes, and short reading comprehensions. Two (2)
lessons will be administered every week.
Monitoring Sheet
An individual monitoring sheet will be accomplished by the LSA every
week to identify what the learners need to develop further. They will take
note of the improvements of the learner.
Post-Reading Assessment
The Post-Reading Assessment will be given at the end of the lessons.
This will also serve as an indicator if the learner needs enrichment lessons.
