Mediware Completes Acquisition Of Chemotherapy Management Software From Cobbler ICT Services For US$2.2 Million
Deal Type Asset Purchase
Deal in Brief
Mediware Information Systems, Inc., a provider of specialized technology solutions for healthcare institutes, completed the
acquisition of assets associated with the Cyto Management System (CMS), a chemotherapy management software solution,
from Cobbler ICT Services BV, for a purchase consideration of €1.7m ($2.22m).
Following the transaction, Mediware Information Systems will continue to market the software through its existing European
distribution agreements under Mediware’s international brand. The software will also be made available in the UK and Ireland
markets. The company may also consider additional geographic expansion, as opportunities arise.
Thomas Mann, president and CEO of Mediware Information Systems, said, “Oncology is one of the fastest growing areas of
healthcare. There are more than 11 million new cancer cases reported every year, a number that could increase to 16 million
by 2020. As a result, there have been huge investments in new treatment technologies and pharmaceuticals. Cancer drugs
alone have seen a four-fold increase in sales over 10 years to more than $19 billion in 2008. Yet, despite this intense global
investment, care providers are still underserved by software solutions that do not effectively manage the data, process and
reporting requirements of these complex personalized treatment plans. With the cost of care increasing dramatically, we believe
there is a critical need for a system that provides precise therapy management for the patient, while also monitoring and
reporting those treatments, their outcomes and costs. The acquisition of the CMS software and intellectual property is strategic,
provides a good value for Mediware and launches us in a new area of care. With our experience in medication management,
FDA regulations and complex information management, I believe Mediware has the experience to become a leader in this
pivotal and rapidly growing area of healthcare technology. Driving the high growth potential of this global market is the
recognition that highly personalized cancer care is increasingly important to patient survival rates. But to be optimally effective
these precision treatment regimens require robust and highly specialized information systems capable of coordinating therapies
and tracking outcomes while managing costs. The CMS software is well positioned to support these goals. It has rich clinical
features and powerful integration capabilities that enable its use with our existing products as well as the hospital’s core
electronic health record. It also has a robust multi-lingual platform that provides the solution with multi-national appeal. This
should make it an efficient contributor to our continued international growth.”
This acquisition enables Mediware Information Systems to strengthen its business operations in the international cancer care
market, and expand in Europe.

Mediware Information Systems Expands Technology Integration Agreement With Epic Systems
Deal Type Partnerships Deal Sub Type Other
Deal in Brief
Mediware Information Systems, Inc., a provider of specialized technology solutions for healthcare, expanded its technology
integration agreement with Epic Systems Corporation, a healthcare IT company, to identify additional areas of data and
functional integration to further increase efficiency and improve patient safety.
Under the agreement, Mediware will expand the integration between its HCLL blood transfusion management software and
Epic Systems' electronic medical record (EMR) software for acute care hospitals. Mediware is analyzing the first hand
experience of its customers who also use Epic’s EMR software to identify additional areas of data and functional integration to
further increase efficiency and improve patient safety. With the expansion of the technology integration between the two
companies, Mediware customers are expected to have improved bi-lateral data sharing, enabling HCLL customers in the blood
bank to include additional patient information via Epic's software system in their analysis of particular therapies.
Thomas Mann, president and chief executive officer of Mediware, said, “We’re pleased that we share so many customers with
the market’s leading EMR solution and that we can help make these technologies even more valuable to our combined
customers. These are sophisticated organizations that understand the benefits of having the best technology available. Their
expertise is helping us to identify areas where we can improve interoperability, making relevant patient data more accessible
between HCLL and the Epic EMR. Ultimately our goal is to help customers directly impact clinician efficiency and improve
patient safety.”
Dr. Mick Scanlan, director of transfusion medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University, said, “Information sent from HCLL will
allow nurses to use the EMR to computer authenticate blood products before starting a transfusion. Conversely, information
sent from the EMR gives laboratories a better picture of their available blood inventory and will help reduce blood wastage.
Ultimately, I predict that improved information sharing will result in safer, less costly transfusions.”
The agreement enables the partners to improve safety and efficiency of customers using electronic medical record (EMR)
software.
Deal Rationale
The agreement enables the partners to improve safety and efficiency of customers using electronic medical record (EMR)
software.
