Proposal
Our idea for the short film is to do a Political Drama. It starts with a young girl (17 years
old) sitting in the dark by her desk, with a single lamp on. She’s writing a letter to the
Prime Minister, talking about climate change and how something needs to be done. As
she writes the letter, the camera zooms in on certain parts of the letter, for example
when she’s talking about deforestation, ice caps and extinction, B-Roll will then be
used. Overall we are going to film sections of the letter, since we can’t use dialogue we
will use the letter to get the audience to understand what will happen. The girl will
also go to a protest, The Extinction Rebellion, which is a two week long protest
happening all over the world, since we are close to London we will be going there. It
will be a non-linear narrative, just like our music video, since it will go back and forth
from the letter to footage relating to it.
We are producing our production for the ‘Be Creative’ competition, where there’s also
a £50 reward. The winner isn’t just chosen by how good their production is but also on
how hard they worked and they have passion to create something to be proud of. For
our short film we need to make sure there’s no dialogue, at least two character, music
allowed to create tension but not throughout (as it would then be a music video) and
the genre needs to be clear. We only got two choices for which target audience we
want to produce for, either 5-12 year olds or 25-40 year olds. The final deadline for
everything is Thursday the 28th November 2019 and the Festival (in which we view
everyone’s work) will be Monday the 9th December 2019.
We chose to create a production for people between the ages 25-40, it’s a little older
than our usual target audience ages we’ve picked for past productions (16-24 year old)
but we like a challenge and we want to be pushed out our comfort zones. When we
sent out our surveys and got our focus group together, a few people mentioned that
they didn’t find the original idea exciting or interesting so we needed to think on how
would could make it more intense and what made the character so passionate about
it. Since we aren't allowed to use dialogue and we had to try to make it exciting for our
audience. We chose writing a letter, since she's saying what she wants to say, just not
out loud. Within the letter we can create tense by using the actors facial expressions to
show anger and determination.
Overall we are in hopes to create something exciting, that will really grab our
audience. We need to keep in mind about our foley sounds and the locations we go to
because it's about the background rather than what the character says.
When we sent out the survey to our target audience about our idea, we asked what
genre people would prefer and what sort of narrative they'd like. The majority said
'Drama' for genre, which really made us think about the dramatic side of our short film,
what could she do that motivates her to write the letter or how passionate is she
about changing the world for the better. Though before we had a soild idea for our
short film, people said they liked 'linear' narratives, meaning everything will go in an
order. But when deciding to use a letter instead of dialogue, it made us realise that
having a linear narrative could be quite boring, from showing all of the letter to then
showing all of the clips as one. So by having a non-linear narrative, we can cut pieces
of the letter and show what's written down in actual form (for example her writing
about the protest then showing her at the protest).

The Letter
Dear Prime Minister,
Do you know what is happening around the world right now?
Are you aware of the climate change, and what it is doing to the planet? The ice caps
are melting which cause the sea levels to rise, different species are getting closer to
extinction every single day. Yet, I have no clue as to what changes you are making.
What things are you doing in an effort to improve the planet? Woodlands are still
being torn down for residential developments, 93% of our energy comes from non-
renewable sources, these things contribute to our carbon footprint and increases the
number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. But again, I still don’t know what you
are doing to improve the planet and decrease the effects of climate change.
Right now, everyone is thinking about Brexit and how you are unable to come to an
agreement, but we may not even have much of a future after Brexit. The planet is
dying, and if we don’t do something so will everything else on it. My generation and
the ones after it will be the ones who have to suffer the consequences of your actions.
We will be the ones who have to fight for survival, when you got to live your life, how
you wanted, without a care in the world for anyone or anything else. We need to
worry about the later generations, will they get a chance to live a full and healthy life?
‘Climate Change Kills’. The Earth would be much better without us, so why don’t we
look after it while we are here?
I live with my Mum and Sister, who have been supporting me with the decision to help
save the planet, changing our daily life so it’s more efficient. By turning off devices we
aren’t using which includes charging cables and lights, reducing the amount of water
we are using when washing up and taking shorter showers. Recycling is now key,
making sure every single bottle is recycled. The air pollution is terrible where I live, as
the main road is right next to my home with a petrol station on the other side. I have
to walk from my house to the bus stop every day, meaning I breathe this air in daily
but it’s even worst in the summer when I open my windows when it gets too hot. It’s
unbearable.
There are plenty of ways we can all help prevent Global Warming, even if it’s a small or
large impact, anything will help. We need to push out single use plastics, get retail
stores to sell reusable or paper bags. I don’t think getting people to pay for a 5p plastic
bag is much of a change, we need an alternative. Get more businesses to use
renewable sources, such as: Solar Panels, Water Energy (Tidal Energy) and Wind
Turbines. We need to encourage people to recycle more, bringing more advertisement
for it.
I’ve been to protests, where a whole community of people want to help change the
world for the better. We want to spread the message, let people know that we must
come together to help save our home. It taught me about how much others care,
everyone was so friendly and kind, it made me feel welcomed. By putting tape over my
mouth, it allowed me to protest in silence, peacefully and to show my support.
I have noticed while in London, there are a few changes being made that are really
effective, such as having free water fountains where people can reuse their water
bottles rather than throwing them away and buying more. This is a start, we need to
keep going. I think Norway are a great example of how a country should work hard to
save the planet. They have more and more citizens recycling because they offer
Page 6 of 25

rewards. They deposit their plastic bottles into bottle banks and get money back in
return. With around 97% of plastic bottles being recycled in Norway alone.
Greta Thunberg's actions have inspired me, knowing that a girl who is younger than
myself, can make such a big impact and cares deeply for our planet and future, just
makes me more determined. Anyone can help, everyone has a freedom of speech and
we can all help save our home.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I hope this is as important to you as it
is to me. And that we can give future generations the life they deserve.

Yours Sincerely,
(Name)

Contingency Plan
We have asked Elizabeth Botting to play the lead role in our short film. She has
confirmed that she can film the short film with us so this is good. However we have
asked Tia Manka to be a backup actor in case of any problems that stop Elizabeth from
being in our production. Olivia Pullin has agreed to play the smaller role in our short
film. On top of this Olivia is a director and camera operator, and she has also secured
the flat we will be filming in as it belongs to a relative of hers. If Oliva is unable to be in
the production, she will most likely not be directing or operating a camera, so we will
have to find another suitable date to film.

We are going to be using quite a bit of archive footage in our production, but we will
be filming some parts ourselves. The part we film are when our character is at the
protest, when she writes the letter, when the two characters argue, and also some B-
roll. The protest is taking place in a public place, so we don’t need permission to film,
and we can’t exactly be turned away but if we are unable to film when the protest is
happening this could cause some issues. If this is the case, we would have to either
fake a protest, which would require more actors, or we could use archive footage of a
protest but this would mean our actor wouldn’t be in the footage. We are also
planning on filming at Olivia’s sisters flat. She has confirmed that it is okay that we film
there, but if for any reason we cannot film there, we could either film at Olivia’s house
or Jermaine’s house. So we do have a backup in case of any issues.

The scenes that take place at the protest are outside, and obviously the scenes in the
flat are inside. Luckily we don’t need any specific weather for the short film, however it
would be good if it wasn’t raining. If it does happen to rain, we will just record anyway
and use whatever footage we get.
