INTRODUCTION
 Dangerous road surface conditions are major stractions for safe and
comfortable transportation.
 One approach to road damage detection is to use human reports to central
authorities. While it has the highest accuracy, assuming that people are fair.
 Statistical analysis can be used to estimate damage probabilities of road
segments based on their usage intensity.
 Surface analysis using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) have been
developed but this technology uses expensive equipments and thus limiting
its accessibility.

OBJECTIVES
Some of our objectives that should be achieved by the pothole detection
system are:
 The system should be able to detect events (potholes in our case) in real
time.
 Collection of raw data for offline post processing is classified as additional
feature.
 The system should use a generic Android OS based smart-phone that has
built-in accelerometer sensors as the hardware/software platform.
Portability to other compatible platforms is classified as an additional
feature.
 The system should be able to run on different smartphone models with
different parameters. During the system implementation process the set of
minimal smartphone parameters should be determined and described.

OBJECTIVES(CONTINUED)
 The system running on a smart-phone should be able to
perform its native communication tasks on adequate quality
level.
 System should be able to detect events during driving in
different four-wheel vehicle types such as passenger cars,
minivans and buses.
 System should have calibration or self-calibration
functionality, as different vehicle types are likely to yield
different sensor data when encountering a pothole. This
functionality should be based on signal patterns specific to
the certain vehicle types.

IMPLEMENTATION
The system is made up of an open source platform such as ‘Adruino’
and sensor system which detects the unevenness of the road by
using an accelerometer and a gyroscope for accurate detection .The
sensor keeps receiving the data and it is displayed on a serial
monitor. This data is sent to an online database.
A channel will be created records these values in a graphical manner.
The real time data can be analysed in the channel created. The
system will be linked to the cloud base which will be regularly
updated. It is cost effective and consumes lesser power, so it is
easier to implement on low-end vehicles as well.

ADVANTAGES
 Detection of pothole while driving.

 Reduced accident rates caused due to potholes.

 Details storage regarding the potholes for future

reference.

 User friendly.

 Cost efficient.

Slide No:06
CONCLUSION
This system is efficiently designed to fulfil two main criteria: First
one being detecting potholes on the road and second is to form a
software interface with the system which can store the data on a
cloud source which is accessible to all. This will help others
travelling on the road

The cost-effective system that is being proposed will prevent

accidents to a great extent. The proposed solution makes use of a
better and more efficient technology to detect potholes and warn the
driver about them so that he is aware a prior.
