Reading strategy—Skimming
 Purpose—to get the general idea of the text
o NOT to understand the full passage

o Like the bird


 Quickly
 On the surface—not every word

 When to Skim:
o Before you read the full passage—it gets your brain ready

 How to Skim:
o Look at title, headings, subheading
 These are hints—what the passage is about

o Read the first and last sentence of:


 the full passage
 each paragraph
o The main idea is usually in these locations

o Look for repeated words


 These are hints, too.

o Read a few words of every sentence


 The nouns and verbs
