I. Essential Ideas

1
Summarizing- is considering or shortening the main ideas of another people. It gives the readers
clear idea of an article or book they may not have read in a concise form (shoemaker, 1989).
Paragraphs are shortened into one, two, or three sentences. Usually, the summary cuts the
selection to at least one third the length of the original text.
In short summarizing is reducing the passage into, at least, one-third of the length of the original passage while
paraphrasing is re-wording the original passage without reducing the number of words.
We have three kinds of summary:
1. Precis or full-length summary
2. Selective summary
3. Short summary questions
Since precis writing is the most used of the three kinds of summary, we shall focus on this kind. here are steps in precis
writing.
1. Read the passage focusing your attention on its main idea.
2. Get the gist or main idea of the passage.
3. Read for second time not only on what is said but also on how it is said. This includes the writer’s purpose.
4. Analyze the structure of the passage.
5. Select key points contributing on the writer’s main idea and purpose.
6. Use your key points in writing the first draft of your precis.
7. Polish your fist draft.
8. Writing the final version.

SUMMARIZING A FABLE
Summary writing is usually used in narratives. The short story, for example, needs a brief summary before going
into the detailed analysis of what the story all about. Usually, a short story can be summarized in five to six sentences in
paragraph form.
Consider the following pointers.
1. You may begin like this: 2. You may focus on 3. You may end like this
- The story begins in a …. - The story - and so…..
- The story is about….. - The character - finally…..
- The story revolves around…. - The main idea - after all the adventures…..
- The story deals with….

Paraphrasing- is writing down in one’s own words an idea and its supporting details in about the same length as the
original article. Paraphrasing aims to facilitate or help the writers in making their materials easy to understand.
Here are some suggestions in paraphrasing.
A. Informational items
1. Select synonyms for the key words in the original passage.
Example 1:
Original text: The goat came to the stream for a drink.
Paraphrased: The goat came to the river for a drink.
2. Reverse positive statement to negative or negative statement to positive.
Example 2:
Positive: He likes extrovert.
Negative: He doesn’t like introverts.
Example 3:
Verb: He cleaned offices for ten years.
Noun: He was an officer cleaner for ten years.
Note: When you change verb to noun, you have to consider the tense of the original. In the above sentence, cleaned is in
past form. The paraphrased sentence, was an office cleaner is also in the past form.
Example 4:
Verb: They cooked in a French restaurant.
Noun: They were cooks in a French restaurant.
Note: The verb cooked were changed to were cooks. Consider also the gender when you paraphrase.
female – cook
male – chef
The sentence, “They were chefs in a French restaurant” is also correct.
3. Change active to passive or passive to active voice.
Example 1:
Active: Some students joined the rally for peace. Passive: The rally for peace was joined in by some
students.
B. Literary items (poetry)

2
Paraphrasing is usually applicable in poetry. Usually one finds difficulty in analyzing poetic language. The idea of
poem is easier to understand if the words used in paraphrasing are simple or familiar.
Here are some suggested ways to paraphrase a poem.
1. Remember that a poem contains sentences which are chopped into fragments to display the style of the poet. In
additions, poetry is written in stanzaic form because the poet uses short words that are highly meaningful.

Example:
BE NOT ASHAMED
By Rabindrath Tagore

Be not shamed, my brothers,

To stand before the proud
And powerful
With your white rob of simpleness.
Let your crown be humility,
Your freedom the freedom of the soul.
Build God’s throne daily upon the
Simple bareness of your poverty
And know that
What is huge is not great
And pride is not everlasting.

2. Get the main idea for each stanza.

3. Using the principle of paraphrasing, you restate the sentences into simpler expressions. Be sure to maintain the
idea of the original passage.
4. When a poem contains inverted sentences, try to write the sentences in normal word order.
THE PROMISE
By Ronaldo Taleus
Inverted: Within a seed is the seedling waiting to sprout;
Normal: The seedling waiting to sprout is within a seed.
Inverted: Within an egg is the hatchling waiting for the crack;
Normal: The hatchling waiting for the crack is within an egg.

2. What is the best way to shorten lengthy text?

C. Lifelong Learning
Directions: Read the fable below entitled “The Fairly Intelligent Fly” by James Thurber. Summarize it.

A fable is a short story, often with animals as characters. It conveys a moral or a lesson.

The Fairly Intelligent Fly

By James Thurber
A large spider in an old house built a beautiful web to catch flies. Every
time a fly landed on the web and was entangled in it, the spider devoured him,
so that when another fly came along, he would think the web was a safe and
quiet place in which to rest. One day, a fairly intelligent fly buzzed above the
web so long without alighting that the spider appeared and said, “come on
down.” But the fly was too clever for him and said, “I never alight when I don’t
see other flies, and I don’t see any other flies in your house.” So he flew away
until he came to a place where there were a great many other flies. He was about
to settle down among them when a bee buzzed up and said, “hold it, that
flypaper. All those flies are trapped.” “Don’t be silly,” said the fly. They’re
dancing.” So he settled down and become stuck to the flypaper with all other
flies.

Moral: There is no safety in number, or anything else.
