SHOULD/ OUGHT TO

It is used when we want to express a subjective opinion. In other words, when


we start saying something like.The modal verbs should is used in the interrogative
phrases to ask if there is an obligation or to ask for a recommendation.

5.1 CONTRACTIONS

The modal verb should be used as follows:

Should not = Shoudn’t

5.2 EXAMPLES:

a ) AFIRMATIVE FORM:

 You should call the lawyer to find out the case.


 You should study your case theory for the Oral Trial well.

b) NEGATIVE FORM: The modal verb should be used as follows:

 You should not look at the cell phone at the Oral Trial Hearing
 You shoudn’t lie to you sponsor.

c ) INTERROGATIVE FORM: The modal verbs should is used in te interrogative


phrases to ask if there is an obligation or to ask for a recommendation.

 Should I attend the hearing?


 Shoud I study my case theory?

5.3 OUGHT TO

Is a synonym for “ should” although it is less common.

5.4 EXAMPLE:

 You ought to study more for the penal course.


 You ought to line your Criminal Code.

Note: “ought to “ is never used in interrogative phrases.
