SIOP LESSON REFLECTION QUESTIONS (be sure to elaborate on your answers...a short

paragraph should be sufficient)

1. Did you achieve both your language and content objectives? How can you be sure?

Yes, my group and I achieved both of our language and content objectives. Our language

objective was “students will be able to identify and distinguish the characteristics of the

four different types of rock climbing.” By the end of the lesson the students were able to

know the characteristics for each type of rock climbing, the students showed this by

acting out their skit. Each group received a different type of rock climbing and they had

to act it out using the specific vocabulary (equipment). Our content objective was

“students will be able to compare and contrast the different types of rock climbing.”

When the students received their slip, they had to think of the specific equipment used

for this type of rock climbing. They had to compare and contrast the different

equipment used for the specific type of rock climbing.

2. Do you feel you "immersed" the students in the vocabulary? Based on your

assessment, did the students have their own understanding of each of the vocab

words?

Yes, I feel as if my group and I “immersed” the students in the vocabulary. Our two

assessments we had the class do was the kahoot and the skit. In both the kahoot and

the skit, the students had to know the definition of each key vocabulary term. In the skit
especially, the students had to know the definition of the vocabulary because they then

had to act it out. They used the specific equipment there type of rock climbing needed

to act it our appropriately.

3. Do you feel you had enough interaction, giving students the chance to apply the

language/content with other students? Why or why not?

Yes, I feel as if we had enough interactions, giving the students the chance to apply the

language/content with other students. The skit we had the students complete was in

partners or a group of three. In the skit, the students had to identify and distinguish the

characteristics of the four different types of rock climbing (language objective) and had

to compare and contrast the different types of rock climbing (content objective). In the

kahoot, the students had to identify the characteristics of the four different types of

rock climbing.

4. What are three aspects of the SIOP process that you find effective and truly need to be

in your lesson plans (especially if ELLs are present)?

If I had to pick only three aspects of the SIOP process that I think are the most effective

and truly need to be in all lesson plans they would be lesson preparation, building

background knowledge and review and assessment. Lesson preparation is critical. Being

prepared increase confidence and when you are confident you perform better. You as

the teacher want to make sure your content and language objectives are clear and

match up with one another. The students will know what they are expected to be able

to do at the end of each lesson. This component will also have teachers provided
meaningful materials for the lesson. Building background is next. This is also very

important. Students always ask, “when will I need to know this in the real world?”

Building background will help the students connect new concepts to their personal and

cultural experiences. Building background is especially important for teaching ELL’s.

Some ELL students may be unfamiliar with the cultural references in texts when the

other students are very familiar and already know. Review and assessment is also very

critical. Teachers need to make time for review and assessment during and after a

lesson. It is important during so the teacher knows if she has to re-teach or not.

Providing feedback to correct and incorrect responses is beneficial to everyone

especially ELL learners.

5. Looking back now that you've completed the lesson, what is one thing you would have

done differently? Why?

Looking back on the lesson my group and I presented one thing I would have done

differently is cut down the information on each slide. Our definitions for the equipment

for each type of rock climbing was a little lengthy. The definitions were long and in

paragraph form so they were harder to read than they should have been. Other than

that, I wouldn’t have don’t anything differently. We were good with time management

and our activities were on topic with our objectives.
