Notes: These are knitted in the round on circular needles, seamless, from the bottom up. Where the legs
knit onto the pelvis, a small hole is created. Pulling on this hole can be avoided in many ways. At this
intersection and a few rows after, I’ve knitted magic loop, I imagine you could use dpns (not my flavor)
or any nice pliable circulars 16” or longer. I've even remained on my toque needles which works just fine
with a little stitch fidgeting when you sew up the hole.
Needles: 5.5mm 16” circular, 5.5mm 16-40” circular, 4mm straights for straps.
Yarn: Worsted 200,280,300,350,450 yards. Using the same needles, aran and bulky weights can create a
denser, less transparent/drapey fabric with minimal change to overall size and yardage.
LEG
Using long tail method and 5.5mm 16”circs, co 52(54, 56, 60, 64) pm and attach to work in the round.
Round 1: Purl
Round 2: knit
Round 3: Purl
Repeat rounds 2&3 4 more times
Knit 4(6, 7, 9, 6) rounds
Decrease round: k1, k2tog, knit to 3sts from marker, ssk, k1.
Repeat last 5(7, 8, 10, 7) rounds, 2(2, 2, 2, 3) more times=46(48, 50, 54, 56sts.)
Knit 4(6, 7, 9, 6) rounds.
Increase round: k1, m1, knit to 1st from marker, m1, k1
Repeat last 5(7, 8, 10, 7) rounds, 2(2, 2, 2, 3) more times=52(54, 56, 60, 64sts)
Knit 4(6, 7, 6, 6) rounds (here is where you have some play with leg length… you can add a few to
lengthen, subtract a few to shorten.)
Knit leg onto longer circulars… you won’t need holders.
Repeat for second leg.
BIB
ws row: s1, k3(3,3,4,5) p16(16,16,18,18) k4(4,4,5,6.)
rs row: s1, knit to end.
Repeat these two rows 7(7,8,9,10) more times, ending with a rs row.
Next row (ws): s1, knit to end.
Next row (rs): s1, k3, yo, k2tog, k12(12,12,16,18) k2tog, yo, k4. These buttonholes can be replaced by
one-row buttonhole technique.
Next row (ws): s1, knit to end.
Next row (rs): s1, knit to end.
Next row (ws): s1, knit to end.
Next row (rs): bo bib.
STRAPS
rs: k5(5,5,6,7) attach yarn for left strap, k5(5,5,6,7)
Work both straps separately at the same time in garter stitch until they measure 6” (6.5” 7" 7” 7.5") Bind
off.
FINISHING
Cinch up the hole in the crotch by collecting the purl bumps around the hole onto darning needle and
pulling. Weave in ends. Sew buttons to straps. Try those overalls on before the imp gets away!
