The main goal in the civil wars was political power rather than control of territory, so the campaigns of the Wars of the Roses were War of the Roses
brief and ended in battles. This was not due to lack of military skill; many of the nobles who commanded in the 1450s had Timeline
experience in the French wars, and younger captains like Somerset, Warwick, and Edward IV, who learned from experience, were
capable soldiers. It was desirable to limit campaigns to avoid causing damage by foraging, and to reach a conclusion before the Date Event

The Calais garrison of over 1,000 men was England's only standing army. The government also paid the wardens of the northern 1429
