Abstract:
Ping pong ball launcher or launching devices can be used in methods of practicing
when a human opponent isn't available to return volley. Currently there are few systems on
markets but due to the expensive and design of the systems, purchasing one of these systems
may not be in ping pong user's best interest. The purpose of this was to design an improved
and cost efficient ping pong ball launcher. The ping pong ball shooter created was an
innovative design that used variable speed controlled motors to dispense balls onto a
launching track. The designer will demonstrate the functionality of their novel, cost efficient
ping pong launcher and how to raise the awareness to customers in selecting the more cost
effective option.

1. Problem Statement

PING PONG BALL SHOOTER(AUTOMATRD MISSILE LAUNCHER)

The army is in need of a automated missile launcher.

-> The missile launcher should shoot three missiles in three consecutive seconds and should
rest the next 3 seconds

-> The missile launcher should be able to shoot at least 3 metres

-> The missile(in this case the ping pong ball) is 40mm in diameter

-> The missile launcher should have dimension 36*18*52

3. Feasible Design Considerations and their Prioritization


The following is a list of preliminary criteria for PING PONG BALL SHOOTER.

• The design should be safe.


• The design must be low cost.
• It should launch the ball with high force and velocity.
• The design should not be detirmental to the environment.

They can be simply written as

 Safety.
 Low Cost.
 Force to launch.
 User friendly.

For the above stated criteria, prioritization will be done using pairwise comparison chart. Below

The reasons for choosing and prioritizing the criteria are as follows:-

 The missile launcher must launch the missile far so it must have higher
velocity and force to launch.
 The missile launcher must be use easily so that the customer or client can
use it easily.
 The safety is third prior for the client after the purchase of launcher.
 also the launcher must have minimum weight so it can be carried easily.
 The missile launcher cannot exeed the large amount ,i.e: it must be of
low cost so everyone can afford it and it may sell more in market.
 The mechanism for using the launcher is made to be easy so that
children can use it.

4. Pertinent information regarding established problem


HITORICAL BENCHMARKS:
A missile launcher is a device that launches missile-propelled projectile, although the
terms is often used in reference to mechanism that are that are portable and capable of
being operated by an individual. The earliest missiles documented in imperial China
consisted of arrows modified by the attachment of a missile motor to the shaft of few
inches behind arrow head. The missile is propelled by the burning of black powder in
motor .The missile launchers were constructed of wood, basketry and bamboo tubes.
The launchers divided the rockets with frames meant to keep them separated, and the
launchers were capable of firing multiple missiles at the target.

OBJECTIVE:
1) To design a ping pong shooter.
2) To design a table tennis ball shooter, and control system to it.
Existing solution:
There are many solutions for existing problems here are 4 solutions.

SOLUTION 1- Ping pong launcher

Working principle:

Main working principle behind this model is elasticity of rubber. Potential energy stored in
rubber band when it is stretched is transformed as kinetic energy of the ball Given below is a
ping pong launcher. It can be built easily with less cost and also has less range as compared to
other missile launcher. the more information can be extracted from [1] and [3].

• 20x large Lolly sticks (15cm long)


• 1 normal lolly stick
• Some 1”duct tape
• Rubber bands
• Hot melt glue gun and sticks
• Or a wood glue

Solution-2: Cruise missile

Working principle:

The key concept is that the ball travels through a vaccum in pipe,
therefore here is no air resistance. With full atmospheric pressure on one side of ball and no
resistance on other, the ball initially accelerates at about 5000 grams. The "cannon" is basically
a 6 foot length of 1 1 /2" PVC pipe. A ping pong ball is placed at the near end, and both ends are
sealed with thin plastic or aluminum foil. The air is then evacuated from the pipe with a vacuum

pump. When the seal at the near end is ruptured, air at atmospheric pressure rushes into the
pipe and propels the ball through the seal at the far end. The body which can carry ping pong
through plywood and aluminum cans. This "vacuum cannon" has been demonstrated in college
physics classes, since it involves many basic physics concepts such as Newton's laws of motion,
air pressure, and particle dynamics. At this speed, even a ping pong ball is very dangerous. We
are talking about a projectile travelling as fast as rifle bullets. More information can be

Solution-3: Missile shooter [ping pong ball]

Working principle involved:

The main working principle is wheel that is made up of


rubber. The ping pong magazine lets the ball through valve, then the entry of ball between two
rubber wheels rotates and finally shoots the ball with greater force in the direction given.
The launcher designed is controlled by arduino. It uses servo to dispense the balls and motors
with wheels to give speed and aim them. All the Materials can be maid by hands easily.
More information can be extracted from [5] and [7].

Solution-4: Vehicle fired missile launcher

Working principle:
Shooter function to controlled speed and spin velocity of ball shoot from
three times.. Launcher with steel surface wheel as end effect or so that its rotation speed and
power can be transfer to ping pong ball through friction. By varying speed of DC motor, various
type of velocity and angular velocity of ball can be obtained. .The launcher has wheels and is
movable from place to place in plain terrain. The launcher has a storage capacity where we can
store the ping pong balls or ammos. Army missile launcher include right and left serve
oscillatory motion, top spin and bottom spin, right and left side spin, combination of spin, or
no-spin modes, variable ball speeds and continuous recycling of balls. More information can be

Teams we met:
We met two teams in our division. And they gave some ideas which we were needed
for proceeding the survey.

Two teams we met have little different ideas in designing the launcher compared to our
ideas. But some solution they gave were similar.

Cost estimation:
By seeing all the criteria we can say our model may cost around Rs- 2000

Ping Pong Ball Shooter

This is a ping pong ball launcher designed to be controlled by an Arduino. It uses DC motor to dispense
the ball and two motors with two wheels to shoot them with two programmed DC motors. Pipe is
attached such that two motors are fixed at the bottom of pipe. The ball first moves into the pipe and it
fells on the DC motor. The sensor senses the ball and rotates foe three seconds, and stops or another
three seconds. As the ball comes down in between the two motors or balls, it is being launched with
high force into the ground. The machine is easy to construct but complications are there in applying to
arduino, the model is made movable by fixing wheels to it or it can be made to stand. The motor is
programmed in such a way that a motor starts to rotate for three seconds and come to rest for next
three seconds by pre shooting three ping pong balls and it continues the same.

Idea no: 2.

This ping pong ball launcher is designed to controlled by arduino. The ping pong ball launcher will work
at this point But ball holder needed a way to hold a ball in pipe until to fire them. So by using the
arduino and the programming motor rotates for three seconds and again stops for three seconds.
Arduino need current so connect the battery to the arduino. When ball enter into the pipe then ball
contact to the wheels which helps to launch the ball. And this process continues until power supply. This
ping pong ball launcher launches other ball at a time and again stops for three seconds.

Idea no: 3.

The ping pong ball launcher is device which shoots a ball automatically. It shoots target designed in the
machine vision software. The ping pong shooter four different section box, rotating table, pipe,
assembly and loading mechanism box used stationary part. And all most all equipments are attached to
box all a manufactured by PVC sheets. Rotating table Is used for loading mechanism and to control
cylinder speed and force is controlled by pressure regulator, and adjustable constructor inside the box.
Two pieces of software are used in this project these runs on computer programming like arduino and
reads the signal and control itself by programming. We can shoot ping pong ball correctly to the target.

Idea no: 4.

The ping pong ball launcher is a device which shoots ball automatically. The ping pong ball launcher will
work at the point but ball holder is needed a way to hold the ball in such a way that it passes the ball
every one second and rest for further three second. This machine is easy to construct but complications
are these in applying to ARDUINO .It can be made moveable by fixing wheels to it or it can be made to
stand. When ball enter in to the pipe then ball contact with air which helps to launch the ball and this
process continues until power supplies. I used hair dryer for giving air or pressure to move the ball to
launch. In this way this launcher work.

6. Analysis of alternatives
The weight age given for the design considerations are as mentioned below

The percent indicating the weight ages for the criteria are decided in pair wise comparison
chart. Below is the decision matrix for analyzing and selecting the best solution out of four
feasible ones.

Design 1:

Low cost: 9 points. This design compared to all is having little low cost. It is all most automatic.

Safety: 9 points. This design when compared with all others is having highest safety. Because everything
is clearly visible. No parts are heavier.

Force to launch.9 points. This model has more power and more force of launching capacity.

.User friendly: 9 points. Compared to all models it has less complicated instruments.

Design 2:

Low Cost: 8 points, This model also costs less compared to design 3 and 4. But design1 cost less than
the design 2.

Safety: 9 points. Compared design 3 and 4 it is bit safe to use.

Force to launch: 8 points, This design has less force than that of design1.

User Friendly: 9 points, This design also has less complicated equipments and circuits.

Design 3:

Low Cost: 7 points. This model costs bit more than that of design 2 and 4. So it is rejected.

Safety: 7 points. This model less safe than of design 1 and 2. So it is not selected.

Force to launch: 7 points, This design has less force than that of design 1 and 2.

User Friendly: 8 points, This model has more complicated circuits than of design 1 and 2. So we
rejected.

Design 4:

Low cost: 6 points, Compared to all models it costs more.

Safety: 7 points, This model is not much safe to use.

Force to launch: 8 points, This design has less force than that of all design.

User friendly: 7 points, This design has more complicated circuit.

9. Testing
After completing the model on checking it, the two DC motors were not fitted
properly on fitting the two DC motors the balls were ejecting properly.

Initially the program uploaded was working properly, but after some time delay was
given less and after rectification the programme executed and worked properly

Initially the projection of the ball was 0 degree but after some instruction the model
was made such that the balls were projected at the angle of 45 degree.

Initially the power used for working was less because first we used 9V battery, so
after some conclusions 12V battery was used and the force of ejection was with high force.

Also many failures while testing the model such as the motor wheel was getting
stuck in the slit because it was not properly oriented and also some problems came across due
to lose connections and logical errors in the program.

The problems were corrected and rectified with help of the guide and using proper
instruction such as using proper chases made of wood and proper taping and model was
modified.

10. Limitations of Present work and Future Scope


LIMITATIONS:-

 The model constructed does not work on rough surface .


 The sensor senses the balls within short range.
 Model uses more power supply.

FUTURE SCOPE:-

The Scope for this model in future is more because this type of missile launcher is very easy to
use and operate. Due to strong base the chances of felling down is too less. Also due to
portable base or movable base it van be carried easily to any places. Also sophisticated
materials which are strong are used which looks attractive and helps more for Table Tennis
players .For making this model a deep research is needed for making and working of this model,
this helps in developing the intigrity of our nation.
