BMMM 2313 DYNAMICS AND MECHANICS OF MACHINE

ASSIGNMENT

PING-PONG LAUNCHER DESIGN CHALLENGE

Learning Outcome LO3 Synthesize dynamics and mechanics of machine fundamentals into
(LO):
engineering practices.
Program Outcome: PO7 Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of
engineering technology solutions in societal and environmental
context and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable
development.
Synopsis: This assignment will encourage the student to work in a group in order to study
the Projectile concept and translate into real mechanism. Students are supposed
to be able to develop and construct the real launcher based on projectile
calculation to achieve the specific objective.

GUIDELINE: PING-PONG LAUNCHER DESIGN CHALLENGE

(Mark 10%)

Basic rule
1. Assignment need to be completed in group of 4 or 5 members (upon lecturer’s
approval).
2. Slide video recording and Final Report need to be submitted through uLearn
according to the set dateline (refer Gantt Chart in Page 4).
3. Students are required to conduct actvities (in according to Gantt Chart stated in Page
4) in order to achieve objective of the Assignment 1.
4. Mark penalty will be applied for late submission and report similarity index more
than 30%.
5. Submission 3 days after dateline will not accepted, zero mark will be given.

Product
1. Every group should have their own ping-pong ball & launcher.

2. Launcher system should be based on mechanical mechanism (i.e. spring or rubber).

Electric, electronic or chemical mechanism is not allowed.

Slide Video Recording

1. Video must be recorded and video link must be shared in uLearn.
2. Most of the video should be based on the slide.
3. Maximum recording duration is 5 minutes.
4. Maximum video size 20 MB
5. Video scene must include audio, calculation, and text to explain projectile launcher
feature, and demonstration of the launcher launching a ping pong in according to the
Projectile Motion Requirement section. Full video of that ball flying into target point-
as a proof.

2
Projectile Motion Requirement

1. Ping-pong ball will be placed at A position. Launcher must be placed at ‘launcher

position’ where initial high of ping-pong ball should be 6.1 cm above ground level.
Ping-pong ball must not exceed point A which is 1.5 m from point B. Illustration of
the setting is shown in Figure 1.

2. Ping-pong ball will be release from launcher as in direction shown to enter hole at
point B.

Figure 1.

Final Report contents

1. Minimum 5 pages, Maximum 8 pages including front page.

2. Format:
 Coverage with group members’ names.
 Introduction of projectile motion
 Mechanism – explanation about mechanism that used and relation with dynamic
& mechanic machine subject
 Calculation – show how to achieve the desire target from point A to point B.
 Discussion – explain about why you choose that equation for your calculation.
 Conclusion.
3. Content of the report need to be consistent (in agreement) with projectile motion of
ping-pong recorded in the video.
4. Turnitin Similarity Index less than 30%.
5. Maximum MS Word size 15 MB.
