EXPERIMENT 3

LINEAR MEASUREMENT
LO2: Apply measurement tools in dimensional metrology, statistical process control tools on
quality issues.

PO3: Able to apply skills of engineering and management which are based on practise and
application oriented.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This lab activity will be held in Metrology Laboratory. Students will be divided into a
few groups and the activities required teamwork cooperation. Students are expose in
handling the basic measuring equipments such as various types of calipers, height
gage and micrometer in getting the required dimensions. They are also needed to do
the verifications of the equipments before any measurements are taken. After
completing the activities, students need to analyze the measurement process capability
by using control charts.

2.0 EQUIPMENTS/APPARATUS
i. Vernier caliper
ii. Dial caliper
iii. Height gage
iv. Micrometer (0-25 mm)
v. Micrometer (25-50 mm)
vi. Optical Comparator
vii. Block gage/slip gauge

3.0 PROCEDURES
3.1 Planning for Data Collections
i. List down the numbers of required dimensions (refer to attached
Drawing).
ii. Assign at least 3 personnel to do the measurement and one person
for data recording.
iii. Decide the appropriate equipments that can be used to measure the
required dimensions accordingly.

QUALITY CONTROL AND METROLOGY

DMFD 3343 SEMESTER 1 SESSION 2018/2019

iv. Decide the quantity of data needed.

***Remark : at least 3 trials of data for each dimension.
***Remark : max 5 samples of data for each dimension.
v. Draft the recording format.

3.2 Measurement Process

i. Only the first assigned person has to do the calibration /
verification before taking data.
ii. Record the calibration result on the provided calibration forms.
iii. Do the measurement for the required dimensions as shown in
figure 1.
iv. Record the data.

3.3 Data analysis

i. Create X-bar chart and R-bar chart for each dimension.
***Remark : use different symbol to differentiate the two
equipments for one dimension .
Note: Tolerance for each dimension is +/- 1.0mm

4.0 MEASUREMENT RESULTS

i. Average and range
ii. Plotted X-bar and R-chart for each dimension
5.0 DISCUSSIONS
The results of lab activities shall be discussed as follows:
i. Based on the control charts, give comments on below subjects;
 Source of errors.

 Factors effecting measurements.

 Variations in measurements.
ii. Give comments in terms of accuracy and precision of the used equipments
versus dimensions.
6.0 CONCLUSIONS
i. What is the MOST probably factors that effected to the measurement
results?
ii. What are the important things need to clarify in providing measurement
data?
iii. What are the impacts to the product quality if the measurement data are
not accurate?
iv. What are the impacts to the product quality if the measurement data are
not precise?
Note: Refer to appendices for the format of report.
