1. Virtual Lab

Deflection of the beam

2. Objective Virtual Lab

 Establish the relationship between deflection and applied load

 Determine the elastic modulus of the beam specimen from the deflection
data

3. Procedure
 . Bolt the two assemble support systems to the support frame using the plate
and bolt supplied with the apparatus. The distance between the two supports
should be equal to the span of the beams to be tested.
 Measure width and depth of specimen and note the readings ( take
measurement at 3 location and the average reading)
 Place the beam specimen on to the support.
 Fix the load hanger at the mid-span of the beam
 Position the dial gauge at the mid-span at the beam to measure the resulting
deflection.
 Zero the dial gauge reading.
 Place a suitable load on the load hanger and note the resulting dial gauge
reading.
 Increase the load on the load hanger at suitable increments and for each
increments note the dial gauge readings.
 when the desired maximum load is reached, decreased the loading on the
load hanger at the increments as above until all loads is removed from the
load hanger.

6. Discussion
 From this experiment what is the relationship between the applied load and the
resulting displacement.
= when load is higher , the resulting displacement is higher
 How the experimental result does differ with the theoretical in terms of accuracy?
= Provided that the correct model is used, the theoretical probability is correct. The
experimental probability tends towards the theoretical value as the number of trials
increases.
 Give the example which related to the actual situation in the engineering area with the
experiment.
7. Conclusion
The deflection is measured from the initial neutral surface of the
beam to the neutral surface of the deformed beam. The
configuration assumed by the deformed neutral surface is thought
because the elastic curve of the beam. ... Deflection of Beam:
Deflection is defined because the vertical displacement of a degree
on a loaded beam.
