5. Discussion
1)What is bending strength?
=Bending Strength is defined as that property of the beam, in which the stress in the
beam increases till it deforms plastically just before its flexural test.

2)Which type of load is applied here?

=Two point loads ‘P/2’ are applied at a distance of 1/3 L from the ends.

3)Which is the IS code used for bend test on steel?

=IS 5242 (1979): Method of test for determining shear strength of metals.

4)What is the equation governing simple bending?

=E/R = M/I = f/y is a bending equation. It is also known as flexure equation (or)
equation for theory of simple bending.

5)How is the failure of ductile and brittle materials under bending

load?
=A ductile material is usually considered to have failed when it suffers an elastic
failure. Elastic failure of ductile materials is not a physical failure i.e. components
does not meet a breakdown.

Breaking takes place by tensile fracture (normal to load) when tensile stress exceeds
the ultimate tensile strength
6. Conclusion
The results and graphs of all three specimens show that only
Al-Si foam has least load absorbing capacity among the
three specimens, hollow MS tube has moderate load
absorbing capacity and the foam filled tube has the highest
load absorbing capacity. This indicates that if foam filled
tubes are used as bumper beams, the safety of the passengers
increases with the high energy absorption of the foam filled
beam. The foam filled beam will safeguard the passengers
and vehicle as well.
