LINEAR MEASUREMENT

Learning LO3 Measure the performance of a measurement system.

Outcome (LO):
Program PO5 Ability to select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern
Outcome: engineering tools, with an understanding of their limitations.
Synopsis: The lab activity expose students in practical on the calibration of basic linear
measurement instruments such as Vernier caliper, height gage, micrometer and optical
comparators, with gauge blocks are used as standard of reference for calibration. After
that, students need to get required dimensions (refer to part drawing) of a set of 10 parts
with same design. The obtained measurement values need to be corrected if the related
equipment has calibration error. After completing the activities, students need to analyze
process performance by using statistics measures and control charts.

0.0 OBJECTIVE
To analyse process performance of linear measurement of fabricated parts using statistics measures and
process control charts.

1.0 THEORY

Linear measurement is an important dimensional measurement for workpiece. There are six main instruments
for linear measurement as follows :
1. Vernier caliper
2. Height gauge
3. Micrometer
4. Gauge block (slip gauge)
5. Horizontal Optical Comparator
6. Vertical Optical Comparator

Before measurements are conducted, the instruments need to be calibrated using a correct procedure.
Measurement errors corresponded to the instruments need to be identified, and then are used to correct the
obtained (raw) measurement data.

4.0 RESULTS
You are required to collect raw data according to format provided in Appendix A in order to perform the
following tasks:
1. Determine the calibration error (e) of each instrument for the measurements of three different gauge
block sizes. Then, plot a graph of calibration error vs gauge block size, if calibration error  0.
2. Assign each of 10 samples (parts) with Part number. For each Part Number, measure the linear
dimensions of side A, B and C, as well as Hole 1 and 2 using one of the appropriate instrument. State
justification of instrument selection in the Procedure section. Repeat the measurement in order to get
total three measurement data for each dimension.
3. Determine error corresponding to the raw measurement data using the plotted calibration error. Assign
the error to the raw measurement data in order to get the corrected data.
4. Calculate average (central tendency) and range (dispersion) data for each dimension (stated in step 2).
5. Calculate UCL and LCL for x-bar and R- charts.
6. Plot Control Charts (x-bar and R- charts) according to a standard format. Use constants from Table of
Control Chart Constant, to calculate UCL and LCL values.

4
5.0 DISCUSSION
For discussion, your writing need to show your:
1) Ability to interpret MSA data and trend correctly.
2) Ability to provide observation and comments related to the interpretation.
