EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Samsons Group of companies is Pakistan’s largest conglomerate company of Pakistan.


Samsons Group of companies is performing better in different sector such as Tourism, technology
and education etc. and has spread its network across Pakistan. Samsons Group of companies has
been playing an important role in the economy of Pakistan since as it attracted investors and
became Pakistan largest conglomerate company in Pakistan.

Similarly the report consists of four chapters. Chapter 1, Introduction of organization and
internship report, purpose of internship report, place and period of internship , department
where I complete internship, Objectives of the report, sources of data , limitation and outline of
internship report. Now in Chapter 2, History of SGCL is discussed and introduction of organization
and Business Volume, Vision, mission, Core Values, as well as Organization chart and Services of
SGCL, moreover Competitor of PTCL. Now in. Chapter 3 is based on personal observation and
experience of the organization which includes SWOT Analysis. Chapter 4 is the conclusion and
recommendations are given from the findings which could help the organization.

INRODUCTION TO SAMSONS GROUP OF COMPANIES

1.1 Background of the study

A corporate structure is perhaps the most advantageous way to start a business because the
corporation exists as a separate entity. In general, a corporation has all the legal rights of an
individual, except for the right to vote and certain other limitations. Corporations are given the
right to exist by the state that issues their charter. If you incorporate in one state to take advantage
of liberal corporate laws but do business in another state, you'll have to file for "qualification" in
the state in which you wish to operate the business. There's usually a fee that must be paid to
qualify to do business in a state. Corporations, if properly formed, capitalized and operated
(including appropriate annual meetings of shareholders and directors) limit the liability of their
shareholders. Even if the corporation is not successful or is held liable for damages in a lawsuit,
the most a shareholder can lose is his or her investment in the stock. The shareholder's personal
assets are not on the line for corporate liabilities. (Entrepreneur. Com, encyclopedia)

The Corporate sector of is an elite business sector expanded in financial cities of Pakistan, and a
policy measure program in the economic period of Pakistan. This program is also regarded as
"Pakistan Inc.", which a drive common term is used by the mass-media of Pakistan to refer to the
corporate sector of the nation. This policy measure program was first conceived, envisioned and
implemented then-Finance Minister Ghulam Ishaq Khan and President General Zia-ul-Haq in
order to lay the foundation of Western styled corporate sector. President Zia-ul-Haq issued the
decree, the Companies Ordinance No. 1984, in 1984 that legally allows a variety of formations in
the mixed economy of Pakistan. The program was started on 8 October 1984 in a vision to promote
Western-styled corporate sector, and business activities development in Pakistan. The corporate
sector came in direct response to nationalization program of executed Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali
Bhutto and the Pakistan People’s Party to promote. This program was integrated in Privatization
program of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1990 who gave free hand to private sector to expand
the economic activities in the country. The corporate sector remained to expand in Prime Minister
Benazir Bhutto's government who promoted the nationalization and privatization at once. In 2004,
in a program initiated by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the corporate sector further enhanced and

matured; it had built a strong and sizeable sector in the financial hubs of the country. Under Aziz,
many of state-owned mega corporations along with private sector had been registered in stock
exchanges of the country in order to promote business competition in the country. (Corporate

1.2 Purpose of Study

The purpose of the report is to review and analyze the functions performed by Samsons Group of
Companies (SGC). Also to get training in real life situations, applying management knowledge in
practice, improving personal skills i.e., human relations, working with people and cross-examining
people. To write an analytical report on the systems and procedures followed by the organization.
This report is related with the performance of SGC. The report brings to light the various functions
of the corporation.

The basic aim of this study is to get the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree.

1.3 Problem Statement

To explore the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Samsons Group of Companies
Lahore (SGCL) of Pakistan.

1.4 Objective of study

The objectives of the study are:

To analyze the strengths weaknesses, threats and opportunities and to suggest recommendation in
the light of the study.

1.5 Place and Period of Internship

The internee did his one month internship in at Samsons Group of Companies Lahore.

In this period the internee got more information about the SGC.

1.6 Area of focus:

The one month internship is limited to HR concerns of Samsons Groups of companies’ main
branch Lahore. The internee focused on HR practices and their activities at SGC.

1.7 Type of Study

The study is descriptive in which different and various attributes of the organization are described
and discussed in detail.

1.8. Sources of Data

The sources of for the gathering of information and data is based on two modes of data.

1.8.1 Primary data

Personal observation in case where collecting of the data related to the bank was required which
was only possible through personal observation.

1.8.2 Secondary data

Secondary data is the data which is mainly taken from other sources and this data exists already
somewhere. In internee report, most of the data is secondary, which internee took from various
sources.

5. Annual Reports and Manuals.

1.9. Limitation of the Study

The vast scope of the operations of such enormous corporation is difficult to analyze in a short
duration on one month. Thus, the time factor is a limitation of this study. Another limitation is lack
of information at there, which made it difficult to analyze the working of the organization.

The report is arranged in the following sequence:

Chapter 1:

This is an introductory chapter, which describes the background, purpose, scope, methodology and
scheme of the report.

Chapter 2:

This chapter encompasses overview of the organization policies and organization structure of
SGC.

Chapter 3:

This chapter is concerned with the SWOT analysis of Samsons Group of Companies Lahore.

Chapter 4:

In this chapter the researcher gives some recommendations about organization’s weaknesses and
opportunities then conclude over all report in a few lines.

OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION

2.1 Introduction of Samsons Group of Companies


Samsons Group of Companies is an international conglomerate that has success stories in
diversified spheres of businesses, especially in the field of Tobacco, Real Estate, Information
Technology, Education sector, Health sector, Textile and Tourism. We also cherish having one of
the largest distribution network in Pakistan. We have over 2,500 employees with business
operations in Pakistan, UK, USA and Dubai. (Samsons Group, 2017)

2.2 History of Samsons Group of Companies


Samsons Group of Companies has established itself as an international conglomerate. A
conglomerate that has success stories in diversified spheres of businesses, especially in the fields
of Tobacco, Real Estate, Informational technology, Educational sectors, Health Sectors, Textiles
and Tourism. The organisation also cherishes of having one of the largest distribution networks in
Pakistan. What makes Samsons Group of Companies a unique organisation is its intrinsic feature
of investing in the areas that not only promote their own business but also contributes in the social
development as well. Thus, our aim is; To Coincide Business and Social Development. (Samsons
Group, 2017)

2.2.1 SGCL in 1970s

Established in the year of 1970, the Samsons Group of Companies revolutionized the Pakistani
business market in the field of Tobacco by setting up the Khyber Tobacco Company in 1971.
Currently it is one of the leading tobacco companies in Pakistan dealing with local cigarette
manufacturing and tobacco export.

2.2.2 SGCL in 1990s

Later after achieving hallmarks of success in tobacco industry the SGC (Samsons Group of
Company) expanded its wings in diversified fields of businesses i.e. creation of Pak School and
Colleges in 1998, to provide quality education to the backward areas of Pakistan. Samsons Group

has a vision to improve the education system in the remote area of KPK first and later all over
Pakistan.

2.2.3 SGCL in 2000s

The journey kept on going and SGC becoming fully abreast with the marketing trends in Pakistan
stepped into Textile Industry in 2005 and established ITHFZ (International Textile Horizon Free
Zone) to cater the growing needs in the Spinning Industry. Further taking its schooling models to
the next level the SGC in 2005 upgraded the Pak School System. It is an excellent project working
on no profit no loss basis to promote education in Mardan, KPK. SGC aims to develop and promote
this model schooling system to all the backward areas of KPK and later all over Pakistan.

2.2.4 SGC in 2010s

In 2015 Samsons Group set up Samsons Developers to provide state of the art construction
models in the real estate sector. There are several undergoing projects of the Samsons Developers,
i.e. Samsons Homes and several other exclusive projects at diversified scales and scope. Another
Landmark project started by SGC in 2015 that revolutionized the field of Information Technology
under the umbrella of SYNNAPPS is called ‘myZindagi.’ It is a trendsetting IT project in Pakistan
aiming at the betterment of Heath Sector. Samsons Tech Ventures was officially launched in 2016
currently working on different projects.

Samsons Group aiming at social development and the betterment of health sector established the
Samsons Trust hospital in 2016. It is based in Mardan, to provide free healthcare to the poor. In
the beginning of 2017, Samsons Group have inaugurated Barakah Care Center in the capital city
Islamabad to provide top notch pre and post natal care to women of all ages. Furthermore, the
benchmark projects at the disposal of SGC are their projects in Malamjabba; the Switzerland of
Pakistan. It was terrorist ridden area that faced collateral damage when Pakistan army cleared it
from militants in 2012. SGC’s projects in Malamjabba include reincarnation of Chairlift,
construction of Five Star and Three Star hotels to promote and revive tourism in Pakistan.

2.3 Business Verticals

2.3.1 Hospitality and Tourism

In addition to our hospital and services industry, Samsons Group of Companies aspires to
champion the tourism industry in collaboration with the local government.

1. Samsons Hotels

One of the wonders on this earth which looks like a fairy land is the most mesmeric and heavenly
looking Hill Station in the north of Pakistan known as Malam Jabba. This most scenic, picturesque
valley is known for naturally preserved lush green mountainous beauty in summer and the snowy
peaks in winter on which when the sun shines makes it look like a casket of gold. Recently Pakistan
has been ranked as “World’s leading adventure travel destination for 2018” by British Backpacker
Society.” Malam Jabba is also known as Mini- Switzerland. It is situated in the Hindu Kush
mountain range, 8700 feet above the sea level, nearly 40 km from Saidu Sharif in Swat Valley and
314 km from Islamabad. Samsons Group believes in social development along with business
growth. The patriotic SGC has picked those areas for investing that would contribute in National
development. Hospitality and Tourism is the most important sector for the growth of Pakistan.
SGC has diversified projects in Malam Jabba to enhance its beauty and make it an attraction for
the tourists of national and international level.

2. Malam Jabba Ski Resort

The Malam Jabba Ski Resort, owned by the Samsons Group, this heavenly looking resort covers
the area of 270-acres land and has a ski slope of about 800 m with the highest point of the slope
2804 m (9200 ft) above the sea level. This unmatched in the world. This natural slope is the
nature’s gift to Pakistan for the ski lovers. Malam Jabba Ski Resort was possible due to the joint
efforts of Samsons Group, the Pakistan government and its Austrian counterpart. The resort is
equipped with modern facilities including roller/ice-skating rinks, skiing platforms, tubbies, leap
of faith slides, rope course, parrot boating, zip liner, magic carpet, jumping castle, ferris wheel and
many more. We are equipped with proper communication networks and snow clearing equipment
and all the security related arrangements.

2.3.2 Tobacco

Samsons Group of Companies has been part of the tobacco industry for more than four decades
now. Today, our brands and companies are known in both national as well as international tobacco
markets. We aim to produce high quality tobacco products with a perfect blend to cater to the
diversified needs and preferences of millions of our consumers nationwide. Fully integrated
production facilities and teams of experts are working to create a wide range of blends in order to
cater to different segments of the market. Samsons Group of Companies is always thriving to
deliver and maintain the quality of its products.

1. Khyber Tobacco

Tobacco business is part of the family legacy of the founders of Samsons Group of Companies.
Samsons Group of Companies has more than 45 years of experience in the tobacco industry. The
company has employed a team of experts and fully integrated system of production in order to
product higher quality products to its consumers.

2. Samsons Redrying

Samsons Group of Companies has been in tobacco leaf export industry for decades now. Samsons
Redrying. is an addition to the current tobacco business which provides high quality dried tobacco
ready for export purposes. Our redried tobacco is known in the international market for its best
quality. In order to maintain the quality of our redried tobacco we have specialized warehouses
equipped with all the necessary requirements.

2.3.3 Technology

Samsons Group of Companies has long been part of the technology industry keeping in mind the
changing needs and demands of society. The Technology sector of the company has numerous
projects and under its umbrella, which are striving to provide the best possible solutions to
consumers both nationally and internationally.

1. Synnapps

Synnapps connects people and simplifies markets using the latest technology. Launched in 2014,
Synnapps has grown quickly in size and now has established teams in both London and Lahore.
Our single-purpose technologies are designed to solve specific problems quickly and effectively.

We target small but precise groups of consumers, mainly within developing and emerging markets,

2. Samsons Tech Venture

Samsons Tech Ventures is a Mid-tier Venture Capital Fund catering to the long term capital and
support network requirements of its portfolio partners. Acting as an acceleration fund, Samsons
Tech Ventures would target high growth mid-tier companies from both the enterprise and
consumer segments.

2.3.4 Healthcare

Health care includes Physiotherapy, Psychotherapy, Diet and Nutrition, Child care, Yoga and
Organic café.

1. Barakah Health and Wellness center

Barakah is a Wellness Center designed exclusively for the wellbeing of the modern woman of

2. Samsons Trust Hospital

Located in Par Hoti Mardan, Samsons Trust Hospital is another generous initiative by Samsons

latest facilities, state of the art laboratory, specialized doctors and testing facilities; the hospital
provides convenience to its patients. The hospital has separate wards for male and female patients
and an average footfall of about 300 patients in the OPD every day. Free medication and treatment

2.3.5 Education

complete description and specifications. Another important consideration at this step is to decide
the target audience, if this is not done correctly, the recruitment will be a waste of time and money
and as there will be a lesser number of applicants so there will be a waste of time and money and
there will be a lesser number of applicants so there will be no chance to hire a highly qualified
person.

STEP 2: In next step the applications are collected from the candidate. Candidates can also apply
through SGCL official websites and submit their CV’s. All of these applications and CV’s are then
judged by the HR and selection committee and the non-qualified applications are removed from
the pool while the applications that fulfill the required qualification are shortlisted for further
processing. The result of job analysis also provide inputs in this step and the application appraised
against information obtained from job analysis

that). These traits includes communication, punctuation, skill, quality work etc.

The personnel branch at SGCL deals the performance of BPS 1 to BPS 20 grades of employees,
and is managed by the SAP (Standard Access Program). SAP is software which contain all data
such as increments, Transfer, posting etc. SGCL also use software called Human Capital
Management System (HCM), which have all the data of employees from their hiring to retirement,
the services, pension, and experience and all the data related to their career are there in the Human
Capital Management System. All the promotions and incentive of the employees are based on the
performance they have showed in their respective department. If the performance of an employee
is not good or he lack some skills then the personnel branch forward the record of that employee
to the training and development manager of SGCL, later on the training is arranged by Staff
training college for these employees to overcome their deficiencies in the respective skills. SGCL
continually provide training to their employees who are lack of the particular skills to improve
performance and to achieve the common goals and objective of the company, and to compete in

Every student in the Department of Management Sciences, Islamia College is required to
fulfill the internship requirement for the award of BBA (Hons) degree. For this purpose, I did
internship of four weeks in Samsons Group of company’s main branch Lahore. During this period,
I worked hard in Human Resource department there which provided me an opportunity to apply
theoretical knowledge in the work environment of the branch and enhance my learning of the
actual work settings. I performed the SWOT Analysis on Samsons Group of companies. In this
regard, main findings revealed that SGCL is a leading conglomerate because SGCL believes in
team working and leadership. Any project assigned to SGCL is done on time and comes out with
fruitful result which further improves performances of SGCL nationwide It has also latest and
updated technology and other important items which are necessary for gaining competitive
advantage in market but it also needs to provide latest technology based services, there is also
shortage of staff in the branch along with deficiency of employees’ training, branch employees
have fear to be overcome due to the prevailing downsizing, branch HR data needs to be
computerized for the sake of better management, and branch also needs to provide more internship
opportunities along with focusing more on career development of the employees and the new
interns.

Some of the general and specific recommendations highlight that the SGCL should provide
effective training particularly at departmental level along with development of effective
departmental communication channels, secure system a should be introduced, merit based
recruitment and selection and new candidates should be hired free of any political influence, job
rotation should be encouraged for all level employees for the sake of better cross-functional
knowledge, market based incentives should be provided to the employees, latest technology should
be introduced in the branches to provide competitive edge, the relevant market research
specifically considering the globalization should be done before designing and implementing the
new policies and procedures in true spirit by the employees, aggressive strategy should also needs
to be undertaken to have an edge on the competitors, quality based products and services also need
to be introduced at the branch level along with staff training programs. Besides, Samsons Lahore
main branch should also provide more space and sitting arrangement to facilitate the employees
and customers, there should be provision of latest technology based services, there should be
across the board service delivery for all types of customers, branch should have more staff to
expedite the provision of services, fear of branch employees due to the downsizing should be

removed through counseling and their preparation for future jobs, the branch HR data should be
computerized for better management, female segment should be introduced in the branch to gain
benefits from the market, the organization should provide more internship opportunities and there
should be a considerable focus on career development opportunities of employees at SGCL.

4.2 Recommendations

4.2.1 Reforms at the Existing System

At the current time people look for convenience and high equipped products and services. To meet
these challenges of modern world, SGCL has to bring new reforms in its existing system. With the
introduction and installation of new latest technology, Samsons Group of companies are really
going to cover most of its problems and on the other side again the customers will move more for
products and services of SGCL.

4.2.2 Update Technology

SGCL should provide up to date technology to its technical staff, and there must be some other
workers who assist technical experts in undertaking any task.

4.2.3 Research and Development Department

The SGCL should have its own Research and Development department and its aim should only be
conducting research in existing and new areas like thus SGCL will come to know what our existing
customers demand and how to attract potential customers.

4.2.4 Skillful Staff

The services to the customers should be provided by the concern staff. The concern staff should
have that skill of detecting the problem of the customers and delivering a suitable solution for it.

4.2.5 New Policies

SGCL adopts new policies, then it is the responsibility of SGCL management to communicate
such information to the lower level staff by placing such policies on notice board. SGCL should
tell its staff what is entry timing and how many hours, particular employee will work because
everyone has its own duty and responsibility.

4.2.6 Check and Balance

There should be a proper check and balance of top management on lower management to monitor
the overall staff and specially finance department and audit of each department can easily handle
the customer up to some extent.

4.2.7 Communication

In office time and without office time, there should be proper flow of communication from top to
lower management and vice versa. Top management should not show any relaxation in its policies
and these policies should be ensured and strictly implemented.

4.2.8 Recognition of SGCL

SGCL has experts in all areas like HR experts, finance experts and IT experts. Sometimes,
international seminars, conferences are held by international or national level governments, donor
agencies and prestigious telecom companies. SGCL experts should attend such sessions which will
increase their skills, experiences and they will get motivated more. Like thus they will also be
recognized internationally.

4.2.9 Updated Website

SGCL has to do make everything on its websites, both big and small and make sure work properly
organized both for present and future which will bring strong impression to the visitors. Updating
websites can attract search engines and customers making business grow.
