Storyboard Review Checklist

1 Introduction

This Storyboard Review Checklist for e-Learning informs client representatives (Subject Matter Experts or
Project Owners) about the acceptable and suitable style and language aspects that may be used as they
design and develop the proposed e-Learning course. An overall goal is to help developers achieve
consistency across all materials developed.

2 Checklist

 Consistency in usage of terms

• User vs. You: Please decide on one approach and use that consistently.

• Abbreviations: Give the full form at first mention with the abbreviation within brackets. Use the
abbreviation after that.

For example: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is a software solutions provider. TCS prides itself
on exceeding its customers’ requirements every time.

Standardise all abbreviations to be used including issues such as using “and” or “&” in the
abbreviation.

For example: Profit and Loss should be shortened to P&L consistently and should not be
shortened to P/L or P and L.

• Bulleted lists: Use one standard type of bullet for the lists. Please define a standard and use
that consistently.

 Sentence structure

Ensure that the sentence is logical (not abrupt) and expresses one entire thought or action. Do not
start sentences with “because”. Please see the example below:

Incorrect Correct
For the improvements in Corporate BiF has re-designed the CPM
Performance Management, BiF has re- process for improvements in
designed the CPM process which is Corporate Performance
presented here. Management, which is presented
here.

The first version is incorrect as it is abrupt and goes straight to the reason for the redesign without
giving the background for this. This kind of a sentence can be classified as a ‘dangling modifier’. 1

 Be specific in your instructions to the user.

• Tell the user to select an option from a menu or list

• Specify icon names
• Specify where you want the user to click on the screen

The sites listed below define dangling modifiers in detail and also show how to correct them.

Storyboard Review Checklist

Do not assume any particular level of knowledge. Think from the user’s point of view.

 Avoid biased language

Do not use gender specific language if you can avoid it, as it is open to misinterpretation. Using
sentences with his/her is one option, but this leads to cumbersome sentences. A better way is to
change the subject of the sentence into plural and use their instead of his/her.

Also avoid the use of language that implies discrimination on the basis of race, nationality, ethnicity
etc.

 Avoid unnecessary words.

Instead of Use
utilise use
ascertain find
attached herewith attached
wires of thin size thin wires
the colour blue blue
in the year 1999 in 1999
close proximity proximity
in between between
inside of inside
go on with continue

 Some other things to look out for:

• Avoid using etc as far as possible. DO NOT substitute with et cetera. Both forms are cumbersome
and should be avoided.
• Do not use e.g. Use for example instead
• Do not use i.e. Use that is instead.
