The bar chart below shows the number of car journeys into the city center over a

ten year period. Write at least 150 words.

The bar chart illustrates how many car journeys were made by the locals and outsiders
to the city center per day during 1996 to 2005.
Overall, it is worth mentioning that there were two remarkable events that had a bearing
on the number of travellers. Particularly, both residents and non-residents did not make
as many trips to the city center as they had used to by the time parking meters were put
into action in early 2000, afterwards when Westgate Street and Park Lane were closed
in 2003.
In 1996, 9000 car journeys were made by city dwellers, nearly doubled the figure for
non-residents at exactly 5000 trips. While the number of outsiders witnessed a
progressive increase and reached its highest peak of around 8500, the figure for
residents seemed to remain unchanged at 9000 during 3 years later. However, when
parking meters happened to be introduced in early 2000, there was a steep decline in
terms of residents travellers to just 5000 journeys made, whereas the non-residents only
experienced a slight decrease to 8000.
Afterwards, from 2000 to the end of 2002, both figures witnessed the same oscillation
at around 8000-8500 and 4500-5000 for locals and visitors, respectively. In 2003, when
Westgate Street and Park Lane were not opened to traffic, the numbers of outsiders
travellers falled sharply to only 3000, then gradually rose to nearly 5000 in 2005,
whereas the figure for residents travellers also decreased to 4000 and remained steadily
till the year 2005.
