learning and 1. Students in third grade have been introduced to the video
background states of matter in first and second grade. Therefore,
experiences before we start our lesson, I will ask students to name the -Smart
three different states of matter. When students answer, I Board
will write the three states of matter on the board.

2. To review the basic points about the states of matter, I
will play the first half of a flocabulary video. This video
covers the different states of matter and how the atoms in
each state of matter are arranged. We will finish the video
at the end of the lesson to preview the lesson for the next
day.

2. Atom Arrangements (15 minutes)
-After going over the main elements of states of matter, I -Smart
will draw on the board to represent each state of matter’s Board

-Before drawing the different models, I will Slide to
explain what an atom is draw on
-“An atom is represented by a small dot
when we draw it. An atom is a very small
particle and when a bunch of atoms come
together, they create a solid, liquid, or gas.”

-Solid: In a circle, draw dots close together and

-Liquid: In a circle, draw dots to represent atoms

which will be a little bit further apart and different
groups of atoms will be connected

-Gas: In a circle, draw dots again to show atoms

that are floating apart, even further apart than the
liquid atoms

-Have students get up to act out how atoms move within

the different states of matter
Solid: Students should waddle like a penguin, as
though they can’t move around very fast and are
packed in to a room really tight

Liquid: Students can move slowly around the

room, like they’ve been given some mores space
to move around

Gas: Students can speed walk around the room to

show that they can move freely without anything
containing it

3. Mass, Volume, and Shape (15 minutes)

-In order to give students more of an understanding about
the different properties of matter, we will discuss three
different properties that are central to states of matter.
-Students will watch a short video that defines and
describes mass, volume, and shape for each states of
matter.

-While watching the video, students will fill out a jot

chart about the three different states of matter. I will
pause the video frequently, not just for students to write
notes, but to discuss how the states of matter differ.
-After we finish the video, students will write down the
definition for mass, volume, and shape in their own words

what the object is and what state of matter it is. When
they have finished, they will get with a partner and check
answers and discuss if there are differences.

2. Preview of the Next Day

-The next day, we are going to talk about the different
ways that states of matter will change. To introduce this, I
will finish the Flocabulary video.
