Chapter 16 Persuasive Speaking Review Question (20 points)

Trinity WIlliams
1. Explain the following with an example not listed in the chapter (2 points each)

Proposition of Fact

Explaining a debate on whether or not something exists or is true/false, for example is the JFK
assassination a government conspiracy? The ultimate "answer" to this speech would be yes or no. This
can also be whether or not something exists.

Proposition of Value

Talking about something is right/ wrong, or moral/immoral, for example gay marriage. You would end
up either agreeing or disagreeing with the speaker. This also can mean what is better or worse than
something else, for example: cars.

Proposition of Policy

A should/ should not opinion discussion. For example, thinking marijuana should/ should not be
legalized. You would morally agree or disagree with the speaker at the end of the speech. This type of
speech is for promoting advocacy.

What is ‘foundational support’?

Foundational support is evidence, facts, and/or examples in a persuasive speech meant to help
persuade the audience into agreeing with you.

2. Explain the differences between a speech to convince and a speech to actuate. (4 points)

To convince someone on something you want them to accept your viewpoint, but to actuate someone
you are convincing them to do something/ to take action.

3. You have been invited to speak to administrators of SSU about increasing alumni support for the
school. (5 points)

What steps will you take to build your ethos for this audience?

State your standing at SSU. Your current year, your involvement in the community, your major, etc. Who
you are to SSU.

Give an example of a logical appeal you could make:

Current alumni support examples and what they've been doing for the school. Along with how useful
they are to raise support for the community.

Give an example of an emotional appeal you could use:

Talk about an emotional story from alumni from SSU. Raise support by having an emotional appeal to
the audience, give them a good story about alumni themselves and/or how they've helped the
community.

4. Which organizational pattern do you plan on using with your speech? Explain why? (3 points)

I plan on using a proposition of policy because I feel like especially now in the tense political climate
we're in right now, there's a lot of issues to talk about. And considering my audience the majority of us
live in MA so I could discuss new voting issues coming up on the ballot.
