INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Nowadays technology is everywhere. The successful of the students’

academic performance is based to their mobile phone and become their goal for

their studies (Cuban, 1986). The technology is an inventions use to give

satisfactory to human beings into their daily lifestyle. The technology is very

rampant into their different kinds and variety of uses.

There is technology that is very useful or very significant to human beings;

also there is also technology that is rarely used. Un fortunately, technology is one

also of the cause or factors that lead people into different class of living and

people from far areas are able to reach and communicate to their acquaintance.

The beneficent of the technology are either, to destroy or erect a good life of a

person.

We don’t know why students are very conservative to their technology the

mobile phone. The mobile phone is one of the very useful technologies to

human’s life. With the 8 billion people on earth, this 8 billion are mostly using of

mobile phone for communications. The mobile phone can consider and obviously

rank as the first technology used of all worldwide. The addiction in mobile phone

is one of the student’s problems to their academic achievements. Mobile phone

is similar to the addiction of illegal drugs or alcohol. Students cannot be able to

move their own without their mobile phone. The mobile phone brings infections

or failure to students’ academic performance.

The students nowadays are very dependent to this technology the mobile

phone. There are two types of effects can a mobile phone may has either a

positive effects or negative effects. Students will always go to their school with

their mobile phones.

 Mobile phone is used for communications and used to share information’s

in trough social media all over the world. A student can share or receive

information through their mobile phone. However, students are using mobile

phone to cheat or even used for cyberbullying.

The study habits of students are turn into bad habits. The students are not

able to cope this because they know that this is the way to have good grades or

to achieve what they want to. The overused of mobile phone can lead to failure

of their academic performance in school. The effect of mobile phone to the

students is not only to their academic even on their health because this may lead

to illnesses or sickness.

This is the number one problem of the parents to their son and also the

teachers of the school. We the researcher conducted this study in order to

understand if the using of mobile phone of the students will affect their academic

performance. This problem of the students’ academic performance is one

problem that encountered by the students, teachers and parents of the of the

grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school students in Manay National High

School.

The grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school students in Manay

National High School are facing of this problem. Through this study we as

researchers can able to determine the effect of mobile to students and teachers

and parents can able to find solutions to this problem.

There are lots of students in Manay National High School especially the

grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high students that are practicing cheating

during exam through mobile phone. There are teacher’s complaining this problem

to the students of using mobile phone. The mobile phone can disturb the studies

of the students. Students are using electricity in school for them to use their

mobile phone. Every vacant time student is holding their mobile phone chatting,

texting and playing games instead of doing of their assignments or projects. They

said that it makes them relieved from stress or problems to their studies that are
why they able deal with their mobile phone. Through online games with friends

they felt comfortable with it and share their emotions through their mobile phone

in social media. The mobile phone can be a huge problem to the students in

Manay National High School if these issues will immediately solve early as

possible. As time goes by students in senior high school are very dependent to

mobile phone and very addicted to it. There will possible that this little problem

will lead into a big disaster to student’s studies. The students of grade 11 stem

waling-waling senior high school students of Manay National High School are

invading by the addiction of mobile phone. Their goal to their studies is going to

be fade.

This is the issue that Manay National High School should look for

intervention and concerns. The students should also be aware of the effects of

the mobile phone to their academic performance. The students and teachers

should have this cooperation to individuals for the goal for the sake of the

institution. Manay National High School, yet the students are not able to address

this problem. We the researchers will conduct this study successful for the

understanding of the students and knowledge about it.

The mobile phone has a great effect to the academic performance of the

grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school students in Manay National High

School. There are possible that the addiction of mobile phone of the grade 11

stem waling-waling senior high school students in Manay National High School

to their studies, health, emotional, mental or financial. The times for their studies

are spend to their mobile phone using it and tolerate their tasks in their home.

The effect of mobile phone to their emotional is the first target of it through social

media. What they see or hear is account to the effects that the will might

encounter that will occur unto their lives. Second maybe the mental of a person.

Mental has a large role into human brain. It is the main source of rational as a

person. The mobile is very rampant and widely used by all students in Manay
National High School. Using mobile phone is the one way of having an

information’s.

The necessity of conducting this study is it will give awareness and

understanding to the grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school students of

Manay National High School about the effects of Mobile Phone to their Academic

Performance. We conduct study because we want to determine the effects of

Using Mobile Phone and the Academic Performance of the senior high school

students. This problem that she or he is currently encountered by the students of

senior high school students. Therefore, through this study we as researchers can

give solutions to the students on how to cope and improve their life or their studies

not to be dependent to mobile phone. With the researchers, students, and

teachers in Manay National High School this study will give a very great help and

benefits to each and every one.

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to determine the relationship of Using Mobile Phone in

relation to Academic Performance of the grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high

school students in Manay National High School during the school year of 2019-

2020. More specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the level of Using of Mobile Phone of grade 11 stem waling-

waling senior high school students?

2. What is the level of Academic Performance of grade 11 stem waling-

waling senior high school students?

3. Is there significant relationship between Using Mobile Phone and

Academic Performance of the grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school

students in Manay National High School?

Hypothesis

1. There is no significant relationship between Using of Mobile Phone and

Academic Performance of Grade 11 Stem Waling-Waling of Senior high school

students in Manay National High School.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable. Using Mobile Phone which the Independent

Variable for this study according to Ware (2019). the mobile phone is the portable

using wireless that communicate far areas. this independent variable the mobile

phone is the device which used by students and because of this the using of

mobile phone of grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school students in

Manay National High School effecting their academic performance which the

dependent variable.

Dependent Variable. Academic performance which the Dependent

Variable for this study according to Monnal (2019). The academic performance

is an education of knowledge to produce performance of application to the

students. This dependent variable the academic performance is the

measurement of which is the student’s achievement to his or her subject in a

class. The Academic Performance is the output of the independent variable that

trying to measure the factor which is observed and measure the academic

performance of the senior high school students in Manay national high school.

This variable is very vital to the studies of the students for determining and

understanding this phenomenon.

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study are beneficial to the following:

Students. This study provides with a better understanding in gaining

knowledge and ideas about the effect of Using of Mobile Phone to their Academic

Performance.

Teachers. The findings of the study may help teachers for assisting

students to their studies of Using Mobile Phone. In addition, this study would

encourage them to help and guide students to their Academic Performance to

and to develop their studies instead of being addicted on their gadgets of students

in grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school students in Manay National

High School.

Researchers. This study is not only may beneficial to the students and

teachers, also to us as researchers. This will help us to understand and gain

knowledge of finding the effects Mobile Phone in relation to Academic

Performance of the students in grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school

students in Manay National High School. Also, these will help us for the fulfillment

in our Practical Research subject.

Definition of Terms

The importance forms in this study are conceptually and operationally

defined for easy understanding.

Mobile Phone. The term is as the portable devices that transmits or

receive media Borth (2007). In this study, it is the device used for gaining

information by the grade 11 stem waling-waling senior high school in Manay

National High School.

Academic Performance. The term defined as the measurement of the

student’s achievement across various across academic subjects (Ballotpedia

2007). In this study, it refers to the students’ performance in all his or her subjects

the interest of the senior high school performance in Manay National High School.
