Specific Purpose : To persuade my audience to take up on musical instrument
Central Idea : Playing musical instruments offers many benefits to us in terms
of physical, mental and emotional abilities.

Introduction

I. Music surrounds us in our everyday lives. We hear it when we are in the car, at
work, when we are shopping, at restaurants, in airplanes and many more places.
A. The music serves a purpose other than entertainment at many of these
places
B. Music has the power to influence mood and behavior in people and it is no
secret that it is used at every available opportunity.
II. As a former musician myself, I can guarantee that music hold so much power in
our life. Music is used to sooth, to hype up, to educate, for entertainment, as a
medium to remember information, for medical purposes, and so much more.
A. It is used in many ways to improve and enhance the lives of others including
myself.
B. In the past, when I find myself in distressed, my body would take me to the
place where our school orchestra held their practice. That alone signified
how much of an impact music was in my life.

III. Music is a truly wonderful thing and can satisfy just about anyone. But what if you
were the one creating the music?
A. Learning to play a musical instrument has so many benefits – whether it is
building your confidence, reducing stress, enhancing your memory or
widening your social circle.
IV. Everybody enjoys hearing music but the people who make the music have the most
fun.

(Transition: Let’s look into the reason why do we need to learn to pick up an instrument)

I. As time passes, our world has undergone a process of change where the arts are
shoved aside and deemed as an impractical skill.
A. Having an artistic skill like playing music is regard as useless to the society
nowadays.
1. We are now being overshadowed by math, science and sport skills.
2. In an April 2016 article, José Luis wrote an article regarding the global
decline of music education in schools and the importance of music has
in popular youth culture and in creativity within the new knowledge
economy.

B. Music and musicians are not being appreciated enough in this generation.
1. The most famous song list in society is often 3 full minutes with nothing
more than just computer sounds and modified voices.
a. What happened to the time where people had to bring in a full
band in order to record a song?
2. When we go to music events, and the lights dim as the show begins,
often it’s smartphones that first emerge from the darkness.
a. Usually, these types of people don’t come from the circle of
musicians or those who play music instruments because,
generally, having played music instrument makes them admire
performances even more compared to those who don’t play
instruments.

II. The leading solution to the crisis is to start picking up a music instrument to learn,
but how?
A. Pick on your instrument wisely because when it comes to musical instruments,
one size does not fit all.
1. If you find out that you have specific likings for certain genres of
music, you should choose the right instrument for that sort of music.
2. For example, the electric guitar and drums will be great if you love the
rock or metal genre, piano and violin is fitting if you enjoy classical
music.
3. By selecting the right instrument, you will find it more appealing when
learning.

B. You must constantly spend your time on practicing.


1. If you wholly intend to only practice when it’s convenient, you will
probably wind up getting little practice resulting in deliberate
progressions.
2. Creating a schedule will aid you to keep up with your learning
progress.
3. You can get to a modest level of competency with regular training.
4. Spending 30 minutes each day to practice is adequate to help you
improve.

III. It has been scientifically and artistically proven that playing music instruments can
bring a wide array of beneficial traits that extend beyond the music room.
A. Playing instruments helps you mentally.
1. Musical training can alter the brain structure and lead to better brain
development
a. Playing a music instrument includes multiple components of
the central brain and peripheral nervous system as it involves

movements, hearing, emotional and visual abilities
simultaneously.
b. Experts said there is growing evidence that musicians have
structurally, and functionally different brains compared to
non-musicians.
2. Functions of the brain like memory and abstract reasoning skills can
be improved.
a. Many studies show correlation between musical training and
academic success
b. It has been well proven that student who participate in music
programs, perform on tests specifically in math and science.

B. Playing music instruments isn’t only good for our brain but it is also proven to
help tremendously in emotional aspects.
1. It encourages us to develop relationship with people
a. Individuals involved in a musical group learn important life
skills, such as how to relate with others, and appreciate the
rewards of working together.
2. Our self-expression can be improved.
a. Musicians are more expressive especially through their
performance.
b. It can also help with stress, insomnia and depression
because it acts as an outlet for difficult emotions.
c. This also enables us to create a music-friendly environment
by allowing musicians to express themselves at any time and
place.

C. Playing music instruments can also generate physical benefits to oneself.


1. Playing music instruments can be other means of exercising much
like athletics
a. Muscle memory is built over time through repetition.
b. Our arm and back muscles are built when we hold up our
instruments like guitar.

2. Our postures and hearing abilities can be improved when playing


instruments.

a. It is important to maintain a good posture when playing the
instrument.
b. This can help us get into the habit of sitting straight and
aligning properly even when we are not playing.
c. Learning music refines hearing skills by training us to isolate
sounds as they occur.

Conclusion

I. Music is a universal language and it is a powerful means of connecting people
II. It will stay in your life and you will never lose the skills you learn.
III. Collectively, the music ecosystem generates benefits like improving the brain
structure, helping in social situations and also improving the physical state of our body.
IV. So, are we going to poorly equip them by denying some of the opportunity?
V. Or are we going to prepare for success and start playing an instrument?
VI. With this in mind, I urge all of you to begin playing an instrument if you have not already
done so.
VII. Create the magic that is music for everybody to hear
