Coordinating Conjunction

What have I learned?

Compound sentence has more than one independent clause, and the independent clause can stand
alone as a sentence. In a compound sentence, the independent clauses are joined using comma,
semicolon or conjunction.
The conjunctions are called with coordinating conjunction. The most common coordinating
conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so; this conjunction connect two independent clause
which is coordinate.

For  shows reason or purpose (sometimes because can be used instead)

While the word “so” introduces the “effect” part of a cause-and-effect relationship, the word “for”
introduces the cause.

And  connects two or more ideas

The conjunction “and” is used to join two or more items that make sense with each other. It can also
be used to connect a series of events.

Nor  shows a non-contrasting, negative idea. Adds more negativity.

The conjunction “nor” is used to pair two negative items. It’s found either with the word “not” or with
the word “neither.”

But  shows contrast or exception.

The conjunction “but” is used to join two items that contradict each other or create a certain tension
with each other. A common usage of the word “but” is in the construction “not…but.” You can also use
the word “rather” to emphasize the contrast in the statement.

Or  shows choice or option.

The conjunction “or” can be used to present two or more options. It’s often paired with the word
“either.”

Yet  also shows contrast or exception.

The conjunction “yet” is very similar to “but” It means something like “nevertheless” or “but at the
same time.”
So  shows consequence.
If you want to express a cause-and-effect relationship, you can use the conjunction “so.” It introduces
a clause that is the effect of a previous clause. Notice that the word “so” can be used to justify a
suggestion or command. It can also be used to explain the basis of a question.

How did I learn it?

I learned about compound sentence by reading the explanation, espsecially about the conjunctions,
one by one. But the most effective way to learn this material for me is doing the excercises, it helps
me to understand about the function of each conjunctions.

Do I understand what I have learnt?

I understand the definition clearly, but I think I still have confusion to understand and make sentence
that contains more than two independent clauses. Why does a sentence stop here or how do I make
a sentence become a complete compound sentence.

What can I do in order to gain a better understanding?

Analyze more examples and make other example to be asked to my friends or teachers about the
accuracy of my sentences.

Paragraphs (draft):
My name is Umrotun Nida, most of my family and friends call me Nida. I am from Cirebon west Java,
but now I stay in Tangerang Selatan to study at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. I’ve been to
Tangerang Selatan since August 2018, and I have passed my first semester in December 2018.
During this time I haven’t gone to place around Tangerang Selatan, so I’ve known Ciputat and Bintaro
(to buy novel at Bintaro Plaza) only. More than 6 months in Ciputat does not make me have many
new friends. It is because of my activities. Only going to campus, studying, then back to my room
(again), I do not join any student extra or intra organization in university, because it is too serious.
Besides I am too afraid to meet and talk to new people. Actually I am not shy, I just feel
uncomfortable being around people I don’t know.
