Narrative Writing
Lesson Plan for Grade 12, English

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The purpose of this lesson will be to enhance how students write narrative pieces by allowing them to
improve their descriptive language, cleaning up their grammatical errors, and being able to follow a given
prompt and still being creative.

EDUCATION STANDARDS

1. C.11-12.3: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization and style
are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
2. C.11-12.3: Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection and multiple
plot lines, to develop experiences, events and/or characters.
3. C.11-12.3: Use precise words and phrases, telling details and sensory language to convey a vivid
picture of the experiences, events, setting and/or characters.

OBJECTIVES

1. I can… tell a clear and cohesive story.


2. I can… use descriptive language to enhance my story.
3. I can… add dialogue to my story to strengthen it.

2. Paper and pencil for pre-writing

VERIFICATION

Steps to check for student understanding

1. Have students write down ideas and then make sure the ideas fit the assigned prompt.
2. Have students pre-write and peer review.
3. Check final paper but allow kids to go back and correct errors one more time before turning it in
for good.

ACTIVITY

Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson

We will read a memoir that tells a story, and then the kids will be assigned to tell their own story. (i.e. the
glass castle, secret life of bees, etc.)
