Spring and Stripper Selection for TOX®-Punches

1. Find stripper force requirement from TOX®-test report.

2. The spring is preloaded in the stripper to FV.
3. During the TOX®-joint formation, the punch travels a penetration distance ET. The stripper force increases as
the spring is compressed. The fatigue life of the spring decreases as the spring deflection increases (see spring
table). Note: fmax. must not be exceeded.
4. Calculation of penetration depth ET:
ET = S1 + S2 + MT - X
where, MT = die cavity depth from TOX®-test report.

5. Determination of stripper force F

F = R . (ET + fV) + FV
FV = Preload force, from table
R = Spring rate, from table

6. For materials with cold working tendencies, such as aluminum, the stripper sleeve must surround the punch tip
very close (see diagram for item 4) to avoid "pulling" the material during the stripping process.

Systems means tested and
documented quality.
Monitoring Parameters
• Material type
• Sheet metal thickness
• TOX®-Tool combination
• Press force
• TOX®-Control dimension "X"
• Tool breakage

Function:
Load cells are used to measure the
force at each connecting joint. A posi-
tion sensor monitors the attainment of
the quality control dimension '"X" (bot-
tom position of the working rod). Once
the position sensor signals that the "X"
dimension has been reached, the Dimension X (mm)
press forces measured by the load
cells are compared with the nominal
forces. The TOX®-Joint is satisfactory
as long as the measured force lies wit-
hin the preset range.

The TOX®-Process Monitoring does

not replace your specific part quality
control requirements, e.g. by tensile
testing, and it does not monitor the
strength of the TOX® joint in relation-
ship to the life (wear) of the TOX®-
Tools.
