1. Abutment [a-bat-ment]- A masonry support that touches and


directly receives thrust or pressure of an arch or bridge
2. Amplitude [am-pli-tude] - (physics) the maximum displacement
of a periodic wave
3. Axle [ax-sel] - A shaft on which a wheel rotates
4. Blueprint [bluu-print] - Photographic print of plans or technical
drawings etc.
5. Cantilever [can-ti-lee-ver] - Projecting horizontal beam fixed at
one end only
6. Conveyance [kon-ve-yans]- The act of moving something from
one location to another
7. Coupling [kowp-ling] - A mechanical device like clamp that
serves to connect the ends of adjacent objects
8. Ellipse [i-lips] - A closed plane curve resulting from the
intersection of a circular cone and a plane cutting completely
through it
9. Hydraulic [hay-dro-lik] - Moved or operated or effected by
liquid (water or oil)
10. Pulley [pu-lee] - A simple machine consisting of a wheel
with a groove in which a rope can run to change the direction or
point of application of a force applied to the rope
11. Oscilloscope [u-si-lu-skowp] -Electronic equipment that
provides visual images of varying electrical quantities
12. Pneumatics [nyoo-ma-tiks] - The branch of mechanics
that deals with the mechanical properties of gases
13. Plumb [plam] - Adjust with a plumb line so as to make
vertical
14. Ream [reem] - A large quantity of written matter

16. Vacuum [va-kyum] - An electrical home appliance that
cleans by suction
17. Valve [valv] - Control consisting of a mechanical device
for controlling the flow of a fluid
18. Thermodynamics [ther-mow-day-na-miks] - The branch
of physics concerned with the conversion of different forms of
energy
19. Locomotive - A wheeled vehicle consisting of a self-
propelled engine that is used to draw trains along railway tracks
20. Centrifuge - Rotate at very high speed in order to
separate the liquids from the solids
