Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

Students must pass all three Praxis Core Exams (reading, writing and math) in order to continue

working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Education. These exams will test students (future

educators) to make sure that they are ready for the next step and have mastered the core material

they have learned so far so that they can successfully pass that knowledge onto their future

students. This will also ensure that each student in UNR, UNLV and/or NSC have mastered the

basic core classes and are ready to focus solely on education classes. The passing scores for the

Praxis Core Exams in Nevada are as follows: Reading – 156, Writing – 162 & Math – 150.

Exam Preparation

Prior to taking these practice exams, I skimmed through all of the material listed and did minimal

reading. I practiced a little math and read some excepts for fun but honestly not as much as I

should have. I feel as though I did pretty well on my math and writing given that there isn’t much

improvement needed there, just a little refreshing. However, I did not study much at all for my

reading because I “assumed” that I would have done better than I actually did. That tells me that

I need to start reading more than I do so that I can do much better on the real Praxis exams

without having to pay so much money to retake them down the line. I intend to practice on all

three sections however I will be focusing on my reading the most.

Exam Results

My results for the three exams were decent, however I know that I could have and should have

done better. The first exam I took was my reading exam in which I scored a 43% meaning I need

significant improvement. As stated above, I chose not to focus on my reading and overestimated

my comprehension which resulted in a poor result. The next exam I took was my writing, scoring

a 70% which means that I am borderline when it comes to passing. This happened to be my

highest score and I can’t say that I am entirely upset with it. Math was the final exam that I took,

scoring a final 69% which means that I need improvement, but not significant improvement. I

have faith in my capability to pass the Praxis Exams I am thankful that I was given the

opportunity to practice and get an idea of what to expect when I take the real exams.

Future Exam Preparation

I am very determined to pass these exams on my first try, which is why after taking the practice

exams I have decided to invest some time (and money if necessary) into getting that extra help. I

want to focus on difficult math by going to the CSN math tutoring sessions whenever I am free.

When it comes to my reading and writing, I intend to use the free Praxis Prep websites to help

better my comprehension and vocabulary. After going through my graded exams, I have come to

the realization that my vocabulary is not as expanded/strong as it should be which is why I must

work on that if I am to understand the kind of literature text that I was given today. Having said

this, I will also be going to my local library so that I can start reading more books.
